I have bad news for everyone on this particular list that is descended from Charles Upton, myself included - you are an Upton in name only!!!
Charles Upton was the illegitimate son of Thomas Robotham and Hannah Upton and was born in 1840, some 5 years AFTER the death of James Upton in 1835.
This fact did not pass Charles by because although he did name James Upton as his father on his marriage certificate, in 1880 he had a son who he named Thomas Robotham Upton - obviously out of memory of his real father.
