Guardian Unlimited Arts Friday Review The lost queen
On February 8 1969, my film director husband Sandy Mackendrick left for Scotland to finalise locations for a film about Mary Queen of Scots.
Mary had left Scotland in exile to France at the age of three, returning at 18 - French-speaking, already widowed - to be Queen of Scotland.
It's no surprise that the Mary Queen of Scots story has long fascinated writers.

MTV.com - Movies - Mary, Queen of Scots
Vanessa Redgrave stars as Mary Stuart of Scotland, with Glenda Jackson costarred as Queen Elizabeth I. As with the earlier Maxwell Anderson play Mary of Scotland the film's sympathies are with Mary, and there are two contrived, wholly fabricated face-to-face confrontations between the two queens (who never met in real life).
Mary Queen of Scots was merely tolerated by critics of 1971, with Pauline Kael snippily commenting that she preferred the 1925 Our Gang two-reeler Mary Queen of Tots !
The film is literally swamped with lavish Tudor decor, perhaps the only completely accurate aspect of the whole project.

Mary's reputation in Christian terms is pretty well non-negotiable, because the creeds, the ancient formulas summing up the doctrine all believers are supposed to subscribe to, describe her as a virgin: the woman who gave birth to the saviour because God, not man, had made her pregnant.
