  Lodge Fort William No 43
They brought Freemasonry with them, opened their Lodge in Maryburgh and were represented by proxies at the inaugural meeting of the Grand Lodge of Scotland.
Maryburgh developed, had the trading rights of its merchants protected by an Act of the Scottish Parliament in 1698, became the headquarters of a Customs establishment with a Collector, Tide Waiters and other officials and saw the rule of law strengthened by the appointment of the first Sheriff in Lochaber.
The Master of the Lodge was John MacLachlan, Baillie of Maryburgh, who was not on entirely sympathetic terms with the local "Establishment"; indeed, he was later suspected of having "comforted the Prince with brandy and oatmeal" when the Prince was in the heather in 1746.

Andy said: "Maryburgh is leading the way in the Highlands on this project and is providing a very useful example for other schools to follow and develop.

A poor surface with poor drainage along with heavy and ever increasing motor traffic on the A862 between Dingwall and Maryburgh was causing concern for the safety of cyclists but Highland Council had felt unable to take any interim measures to improve the situation.
Several years ago a public meeting was held in Dingwall at which plans of the proposed realignment of the road were displayed with the old road re-designated as a cycle route.
The bicycle could be an ideal mode of transport between Dingwall and Maryburgh, a short distance free of severe gradients, but the route must be made safer, particularly for young people commuting to school.
