The BWI Rail station is close to Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI), though not actually in the terminal itself; a free shuttle bus carries passengers from the station to the terminal every 10 minutes between 5 AM and 1 AM and every 25 minutes between 1 AM and 5 AM.
Maryland state transportation secretary Robert Flanagan decided to keep the stations open in anticipation of the bill's passing.

In 1975, the Maryland Department of Transportation began subsidizing Washington, D.C. commuter trains operated by CSX predecessor Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, and in 1976, began funding Baltimore-Washington commuter trains on the Northeast Corridor operated by Conrail.
Maryland established a State Railroad Administration in 1976 to oversee the commuter rail subsidies using state and federal funds, purchase new commuter rail equipment, and subsidize state short lines.
Today, MARC is the commuter rail arm of the Mass Transit Administration (itself part of the Maryland Department of Transportation), which manages public transportation in the Baltimore area, and provides financial and operating assistance to smaller local transit agencies throughout the state.

Commuter rail contracts represented 13.7 percent of Amtrak's $2.1 billion revenue last fiscal year.

BALTIMORE -- Transit officials in Maryland and Virginia are studying a possible expansion of rail service that would permit commuter trains from each state to cross each other's borders, simplifying the trip for a growing number of passengers who live in one state and work in the other, the Baltimore Sun reported.
The majority of those benefiting would be Maryland commuters, since they represent the largest share of commuters into Washington, according to the board.
However, the study also estimated that an additional 5,000 riders would be drawn to commuter rail daily by 2020, plus potential for many more recreational riders between the two states.

SILVER SPRING, Maryland (CNN) -- At least 11 people were killed and 24 injured Friday when a Chicago-bound Amtrak train smashed head-on into a local commuter train during a snowstorm near Silver Spring, Maryland.
Most of the fatalities were said to be on the lighter commuter train, which was being pushed from behind.
