Maryport is a town in Cumbria, England, in the borough of Allerdale.
The Senhouse family were the major landowners in the Maryport area and they were responisible for the development of the town and excavation of its Roman past.
Maryport docks were exporting over 340,000 tons/yr of coal by 1857- about triple the exports at the end of the 1830s.

The modern town of Maryport was the creation of the Senhouse family in the 18th century, who developed the small fishing village into a coal port.
Opposite the Maritime Museum is a sculpture by Colin Telfer, whose workshop is in Maryport, commemorating the town's history of mining.
In 1976 the house was derelict because of a serious fire, and was demolished in 1979 except for the pele tower.

Maryport Marina has a lock gate which is hinged on the floor and just over two hours before high tide the lock gates are opened and just over two hours after high tide the gates are closed to hold in enough water and to prevent the marina draining out completely.
It was noticed that in order to exit the marina and harbour the dolphin would have to pass through a long narrow lock passage and then turn 90 degrees left in order to leave as there was a large harbour wall directly opposite the entrance to the marina.
Maryport Inshore Rescue Boat also agreed to position themselves on the top of the marina with their boat on its launch trailer ready to do a sea launch from the beach as it would be low tide and no boats would be able to reach the harbour entrance from the sea.

Maryport in the year 1832, the year that has always been known as the year of the first cholera, which carried away a great number of inhabitance, was a small town numbering from three to four thousand.
The farm house stood where Ellenborough Place is now and the Old Windmill behind the farm house which was only a one storey house the stabling and at the end of th house the old windmill being used as a grainery.

The Roman presence and influence on the area are recognised by a series of patterned tiles made up from images of objects (sculptures and details) sourced from the Senhouse Museum.

Reports from a close friend, who recently moved his boat from Maryport (convenient) to Whitehaven (less convenient) suggest that some of the 'local mafia' keep boats in the Maryport marina.
There are published reports in local press of violence to elderly berth-holders, vandalism to boats by other berth-holders, and an unwillingness of the marina management types to manage the problems - despite CCTV footage of the occurences.
We were faced with the choice between Maryport and Whitehaven 5 years ago and were advised to go for Whitehaven by a couple of local sailors partly because of the better tidal window but mainly because the entrance to Maryport can be "a bit nasty" with wind over an ebbing tide.
