SAPAAN: Vol. 1 Spring 2003 - Merzbow, Spiral Blast and the Ecstasy of Sound Itself by John Latartara
Masami Akita was born in Tokyo, Japan in 1956 and began listening to rock and roll groups such as The Doors and Cream during his teenage years.
Akita was profoundly influenced by the Surrealist concept, "Everything is erotic, everywhere erotic", and, upon graduation from Tamagawa University, he immediately embarked on a search for a unique art form.
The critical theorist Georges Bataille whom Akita admires states, "The inner experience of eroticism demands from the subject a sensitiveness to the anguish at the heart of the taboo no less great than the desire which leads him to infringe it."[16] Bataille relates the subjective experience of eroticism to the experience of taboos transgressed.

The Beauty of Noise: An interview with Masami Akita of Merzbow by Chad Hensley
was born in Tokyo in 1981, the bastard son of Masami Akita.
Inspired by Dadaism and Surrealism, Akita took the name for his project from German artist Kurt Schwitters' pre-War architectural assemblage "The Cathedral of Erotic Misery" done in his "merz" style-- a confluence of the organic and the geometric.
The full extent of Merzbow's discography is probably only known to Masami himself, but the unofficial count has now surpassed 170 releases on cassette, vinyl, and CD on a diverse array of labels worldwide.

Masami Akita's discography (or at least the size of it) is passing into legend, and it's still unclear what drives his ferocious workrate, apart from a stated aim to outdo Sun Ra in number of releases.
Akita and usual collaborators Bara (turntable, voice), Reiko A. (Theremin) and guest turntablist Radboud Mens cook up a fearsome brew of primitive, feedback electronics and presumably ironic turntablist quotes ranging from Louis Armstrong, bagpipe recordings, the Beach Boys, easy listening schmaltz and unidentified (by me anyhow) rock music.
