Topic: Masayuki Takayanagi

FULL CIRCLE For more than three decades Masayuki Takayanagi (1932–1991) has served as a cult figure to a small but rabid coterie of listeners searching for the roots of extremity in improvised music and free jazz.
Unfortunately, a good portion of Takayanagi's early free-music output is marred by lousy recording quality: early ’70s performances on the DIW and PSF labels suffice as archival documents but barely hint at the true strength and articulation of the music.
Takayanagi's guitar coasts arrogantly over the damage in thick sheets of atonality before rising into dog-whistle range, calling an end to a harrowing 22 minutes of sustained devastation.

 Tribute to Masayuki Takayanagi
Despite a typically clean and well-engineered Japanese-style recording, Takayanagi and band were summoning a noxious, brutally dense and furious hailstorm of noise from their meager instruments - guitar, cello and percussion.
Takayanagi started out performing pretty traditional jazz, but into the 70s and 80s, he pursued free jazz with an exploding, assaulting style, carrying out the best tradition of the works of Ornette Coleman, late Coltrane, and obviously Sonny Sharrock.
What happens on Tribute to Makayuki Takayanagi is more along the lines of mastering a feeling, a sort of density and electric whirlwind, an extraction of the essence of Takayanagi that parallels and simulates but does not replace or copy.

Masayuki Takayanagi has used a number of terms to describe the thing he is pursuing.
Masayuki Takayanagi was born in Tokyo on December 22, 1932.
Takayanagi is not only a formidably skillful and talented guitarist, but an artist continually and comprehensively rethinking his point of view and his own musical character.

Unfortunately, Takayanagi was also possessed of an extremely acid tongue, and managed to get himself completely offside with the jazz establishment in a fairly short space of time, going on to live an enforcedly marginal musical existence.
After the Takayanagi duo Abe's next release would be the edition-of-500, excruciatingly rare collector's item Winter 1972 album (upon which much of his fame/infamy would come to be based), but it didn't come out until 1974, leaving a major chronological hole, which has now happily been almost completely filled.
Takayanagi is simply sensational, extracting vicious, razor-edge feedback skrees from his guitar which slice gaping holes in the air; Abe, as one would expect, rises to the challenge, meeting Takayanagi head-on, and going all-out to match him blast for blast.

Avantgarde Music. Masayuki Takayanagi: biography, discography, reviews, links
Masayuki Takayanagi (1932), a veteran of Japanese jazz bands since the late 1950s, was one of the earliest noise guitar improvisers, and the first (with Keith Rowe) to use the table-top guitar.
Flower Girl (1966) and The Smile I Love (Jinya, 1966) were recorded in 1966 by a quintet led by the guitarist.
In 1969 Takayanagi formed his New Directions trio (initially Motoharu Yoshizawa on bass and cello, Yoshisaburo Toyozumi on percussion) that proceeded to record Independence (Union, 1970), recorded in 1969 and 1970, Call in Question (PSF, 1970), recorded in 1970 with the addition of Motoreru Takagi on sax,

European free jazz can generally be seen as approaching free improvisation, with an ever more distant relationship to jazz tradition.
That being said, specifically Brötzmann has had a significant impact on the free jazz players of the U.S. Japanese guitarist Masayuki Takayanagi and saxophonist Kaoru Abe, among others, took free jazz in another direction, approaching the energy levels of noise.
Some international jazz musicians have come to North America and become immersed in free jazz, most notably Ivo Perelman from Brazil and Gato Barbieri of Argentina (this influence is evident in Barbieri's early work, but fades in his later, more commercially oriented efforts).

This album is part one of the concert that continues with Gradually Projection, catalogued as DIW 415.
Mass Projection is the insanely torrid concert meeting of free music masters Kaoru Abe (now deceased) and guitarist Masayuki Takayanaga.
Now into the 21st century, there are few recorded dates -- live or in the studio -- that have reached a level of white-hot improvisation or communication as this one has.

As far as the music is concerned, I leave you with a few quotes lifted out of the liner notes in order for you to get a glimpse of the stratospherically heights the music tends to skyrocket into.
While bestowing his concept with the character of music (or musical collage), Takayanagi set out to transcend and empower the physical identity, reality and significance of the individual sound atoms that lay at the core of this conceptual piece.

He studied for 13 years under the guidance of late guitarist Masayuki Takayanagi, and played on occasion with the New Direction ensemble.
He was the only graduate of Takayanagi's infamously tough private music school; in addition he was a student of Takehisa Kosugi and participated in Kosugi's 'legendary' pioneering multi-media improv unit, The Taj Mahal Travellers.
Imai's training as an improviser and guitarist saw him studying with both Masayuki Takayanagi (famously, Imai was the one and only student to ever graduate under Takayanagi's tutelage), and Takehisa Kosugi.

Japan-only release of free guitarist Masayuki Takayanagi's last ever ‘jazz'; group, recorded here in 1983 and featuring drummer Hiroshi Yamazaki (sometime shadow partner of the late Kaoru Abe) and pianist Fumio Yasuda (replacing regular bassist Nobuyoshi Ino).
Takayanagi still has that clean/gutsy quicksilver sound to his guitar that was so great on Lonely Woman and the combination of fluid straightahead energy and cluster-fuck detours that he rolls through here is extremely satisfying.
Outside of Takayanagi's more explosive experiments, his work deeper inside the pocket is possessed of its own intimate mystery and the way Jojo squeezes bubbles of nuance from even the most played-through of progressions is still fairly revelatory.

Since Tribute to Masayuki Takayanagi certainly does not stand for the finely engraved music that has made O’Rourke popular worldwide.
The recording was free improvised Death Metal, a committed transformation of the early noise music of Takayanagi (this first Japanese noise guitarist had his important phase in the 70’s) into the present.
The (journalistic) rejection could really only lead to making a further Tribute to Masayuki Takayanagi album and to work out even more concretely the presumed disrespectfullness.

Weasel Walter/Fred Lonberg-Holm/Jim O'Rourke: Tribute to Masayuki Takayanagi: Pitchfork Record Review
For the better part of the 50s and 60s, Masayuki "Jojo" Takayanagi was among Japan's best-respected jazz guitarists.
By the 1980s, Takayanagi had changed his song entirely, abandoning the comfort of structure for the cathartic joy of noise, his work paving the way for the likes of future innovators like Merzbow, K.K. Null and Bill Horith.
Tribute to Masayuki Takayanagi is the sound of music crumbling apart, crashing to the ground, tearing itself apart from the inside.
