Mascagni recommends the Jacks make their stock investments a little more conservative.
To illustrate the damage one bad year of losses can inflict on a portfolio, Mascagni showed the Jacks that if they had enjoyed a 10% annual return on investments for three years, then lost 10% in the fourth year, they would have to earn 34.4% in the fifth year to regain their 10% annual average.
Mascagni recommends at least $500,000 on the Jacks' home and vehicles, maybe as high as $1 million.

 Mascagni and Mussolini
Mascagni's main focus was the care and feeding of Mascagni, and since he was uncharacteristically improvident for a Tuscan, that required a fair amount of revenue.
This was primarily to dispel the odour of socialism which had attached to him because of friendships with prominent members of the party and some remarks made in 1920 in support of striking shipyard workers in his hometown of Livorno.
Mascagni's active importuning diminished after his son's death, but he still relied on the regime to sustain him.

In filanda ("In The Spinning-Mill"), a dramatic cantata for soloists, choir and orchestra, was written in January 1881 by the 17-year-old Mascagni to a libretto provided by his teacher, the composer Alfredo Soffredini.
In filanda was premiered on 9 February 1881 in the Sala del Casino di San Marco, a minor theater in Mascagni's native Livorno, with a run of three nights, and was warmly acclaimed by both audience and critics.
In 1883, Mascagni inserted a small portion of In filanda into a two-act opera with full orchestra entitled Pinotta, a work which did not find its way to the stage until March 1932, at the Teatro del Casinò in San Remo.

Opera Today : MASCAGNI: In Filanda
To his dismay, Mascagni found out that nobody was eagerly awaiting for the appearance of an Italian equivalent of Wagner, Beethoven and Weber in one person.
Though Ponchielli, a professor at the conservatory, acknowledged Mascagni’s talent, he was not ready to introduce him to music publishers, but had only thought of enrolling the young man in his alma mater.
The reason for Mascagni’s conceit was that In Filanda that had been performed in his home town Livorno (Leghorn) with resounding success, probably helped a lot by the generous financing of his uncle Stefano.

With privileged access to extensive primary sources, including Mascagni's 4,200 letters to Anna Lolli, his mistress for more than three decades, author Alan Mallach provides a compelling portrait of a flamboyant, combative, and emotional man who was passionately devoted to the Italian opera tradition and committed to innovation in musical language and dramatic form.
He then traces Mascagni's private and professional life after Cavalleria, examining a prolific yet controversial career that was forever overshadowed by the work that unexpectedly thrust him into the limelight.
He also thoroughly chronicles Mascagni's bouts with manic depression, his marriage to Lina and devotion to their three children, his grueling schedule of concert and operatic tours, his patriotism and bitter opposition to Italy's involvement in both world wars, and his passionate love affair with Anna Lolli.

Five years after this momentous exposure to Sardou's play, Giordano took part in the now famous Sonzogno competition for one-act operas - famous because it marked the beginning of what we call 'Italian verismo' - of which the winner was Mascagni's 'Cavalleria Rusticana'.
The year 1896 brought changes for the better: Giordano, on a hunch, persuaded Mascagni to get off a tram in Florence, on which the composer of the hit 'Cavalleria Rusticana' was passenger of honour on its maiden voyage.
Mascagni was so grateful that he pushed Giordano's case with Sonzogno.
