The plateau covers an area of over 115,000 km² of shallow water, with depths ranging from 8 to 150 meters, plunging to 4000 m to the abyssal plain at its edges.
Limestone banks found on the plateau are the remnants of coral reefs, indicating that the plateau was a succession of islands.

Mascarene Plateau - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Mascarene Plateau is an undersea plateau in the Indian Ocean, north and east of Madagascar.
The plateau extends approximately 2000 km, from the Seychelles in the north to Réunion in the south.
The southern part of the plateau, including the Mascarene Islands (the mountainous islands of Mauritius, Réunion, and Rodrigues, the Cargados Carajos Shoals (Saint Brandon), Saya de Malha Bank and Nazareth Bank), was formed by the Réunion hotspot.

 Indian Ocean - Mascarene Islands
The main islands of the group are all located at the southern end of the Mascarene Plateau and lie in a northeast to southwest line stretching for 875 km, with Rodrigues in the east and Réunion in the west.
The Mascarene Plateau itself is a huge submarine composite arc extending for 2,300 km from the Seychelles in the north through the Saya de Malha, Nazareth, and Cargados Carajos banks to the mountainous islands of Mauritius and Réunion in the south.
The islands of the Seychelles, located at the northern extremities of the Mascarene Plateau, have a different geological origin to those of the Mascarene group, being the eroded continental fragments arising from the break-up of the former Gondwanaland super-continent some 130 million years ago.

Mascarene Islands - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Mascarene Islands (or Mascarenhas Archipelago) is a group of islands in the Indian Ocean east of Madagascar comprising Mauritius, Réunion, Rodrigues, Cargados Carajos shoals, plus the former islands of the Saya de Malha, Nazareth and Soudan banks.
Saya de Malha was the first of the Mascarene islands to rise out of the Indian Ocean due to the Réunion hotspot (35 ma), followed by Nazareth Bank (some 2,000 yrs later), Soudan Bank and Cargados Carajos.
The Mascarene Islands are volcanic in origin; Mauritius is the oldest of the existing islands, and was created 8-10 million years ago (MYA), along with Rodrigues ridge, an undersea ridge.

Biogeography: The role of the ice ages in the dispersal of the genus Phelsuma
The separation of the Mascarene Plateau was accompanied by a tremendous outpouring of basaltic lava from this hotspot, giving birth to a mass of igneous rock called the Deccan Traps, which today covers much of western India.
Because the Mascarene Plateau was just beginning to separate from India at the time, much of this basalt covers the plateau as well, though the eruptions did not smother all of the older granite.
The Mascarene Plateau now extends approximately 2,000 km between Seychelles and Mauritius and is one of the few submerged features clearly visible from space.

The Mascarene Plateau was left as an isolated archipelago in the Indian Ocean extending from the Seychelles to Mauritius.
All we know for certain is that while the plateau was separating from India, 65 million years ago, there was a mass extinction and recent research shows that such extinctions are followed by explosive phyletic evolution.

The Rodrigues Ridge, an E-W oriented volcanic structure extending at 19°S from the Sudan Bank (Mascarene Plateau 59°30'E) to the east of Rodrigues Island (64°30'E), is neither parallel to seafloor spreading flow-lines nor to the "absolute" motion of Africa.
Other studies proposed that the SPA plateau was produced by an independent mantle plume, which could also be responsible for the volcanic line located between Broken Ridge and the SPA, that was first seen on satellite-derived gravity anomalies and confirmed by recent bathymetric crossings.
The SPA plateau is presently in an early phase of rifting, which probably marks the increased distance between the ridge and the hotspot.

 Mauritius Geography
Mauritius and Rodrigues are part of the Mascarene Islands, a chain of volcanic islands that include Reunion, the nation's nearest neighbor at 145 kilometers to the southwest and governed as an overseas territory (département) of France.
The islands are perched on submarine ridges, including the Mascarene Plateau that runs for some 3,000 kilometers in an arc bowed outward from the African mainland, and the Rodrigues Fracture Zone that ripples eastward and connects this underwater plateau with the massive Mid-Indian Ridge.
A large plateau spans most of the districts of Moka, eastern Plaines Wilhems, and western Grand Port, where mostly sugarcane and vegetables are harvested, except around Curepipe and Vacoas, where tea is grown.

Covering an area of 115,000 square kilometres with depths ranging from eight to 150 metres, it is more extensive than Australia’s Great Barrier Reef and is at present the focus of a study by the Shoals of Capricorn, a research programme sponsored by the Royal Geographical Society and the Institute of British Geographers.

The DNA showed that the closest living relative to the Dodo and Solitaire was the Nicobar pigeon, from southeast Asia-and that the next nearest relatives were the crowned pigeons of New Guinea, and the unusual tooth-billed pigeon of Samoa.
The data then indicate the Dodo and Solitaire speciated from each other around 26 million years ago, about the same time that geologists think the first land appeared on the Mascarene plateau.
However, Mauritius and Rodrigues islands are much younger (8 and 1.5 million years respectively), implying that the Dodo and Solitaire used now sunken islands as stepping-stones.
