AutoReport :: View topic - Alfa Romeo 8c Competizione
Automotive News, speaking to suppliers, reports that the Maserati-based 8c would not make a profit at that level, despite the premium over the Maserati Coupe.
Alfa has opened up a near-showroom-ready version of the 8C Competizione, the retro-styled 400bhp coupƩ, which goes on sale late next year.
Alfa Romeo will reportedly build the 8c concept as a limited production model, offering 1000 at a price of around 100,000 Euro (currently $US115,000).

Inside Line: Alfa Romeo 8C Spider to Debut at Concours d'Elegance -
The 8C Competizione had been fitted with a front-mounted, rear-wheel-drive 4.2-liter Maserati V8.
The original 8C Competizione sports car was unveiled two years ago at the Frankfurt Motor Show and ever since the question has been, "Will it be built or not?" As it was so well received, Alfa had at one point decided to go ahead with an open-top version, but then the company's priorities changed.
Now visitors to the ocean paradise where the Pebble Beach Concours is being held will be face-to-face with the 8C Spider, the open-top variant.

Feature Marque Alfa Romeo to Debut 8C Spider Concept at Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance - Automotive News - Auto123.com - Canadian automotive network
make the 8C one of the most desirable Alfa Romeo sports cars ever created, but Alfa's interests at the time were not in building a competitor to brand-mate Maserati, but improving its production lineup.
As it stands, the 8C Spider isn't a second chance at producing the Competizione; Alfa still has no intention putting it into production.
Though its details have yet to be announced, from the photos and what is known about how the car came to be, it's identical to the sporty coupe less the roof.

Flushed by the hugely positive public reaction to the unveiling of the stunning Alfa Romeo 8c Competizione concept sportscar - fitted with a 4.2-litre Maserati V8 engine - at the Frankfurt IAA in 2003, Centro Style Alfa Romeo immediately let it be known that they would be creating a 'Spider' version.
Now, with Alfa Romeo being one of the featured marques at the famous Pebble Beach Concours this year, and with the 'sporty' brand busy raising its profile ahead of a 2007 return to the United States market, the 8c Spider will be rolled out in public for the first time.
The Pebble Beach organisers revealed today that the Alfa Romeo 8c Spider would be appearing, although their release gave very little away.

The 8C is powered by a Ferrari-developed Maserati 4.2-litre V8 with a volumetric compressor producing some 420bhp, which it directs to the rear wheels via a six speed manual transmission.
The 8C is meant as a celebration of all the best elements of Alfa Romeo, from its racing heritage to the overtly sporting overtones of its road cars.
With dual wishbones at either end, the 8C should also be capable of typical Alfa handling; entertaining, involving and balanced.

Alfa Romeo Bulletin Board & Forum - Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione
I'd be much more favourable of this car if it had the Alfa Romeo v6, or even a 4 cylinder engine in it, instead of the Maserati motor which just elevates it right out of where Alfa Romeo needs to place itself to continue...
Alfa’s Romeo’s hot 8C Competizione, first shown in concept form at last year’s Frankfurt motor show, appears headed for a dead end.
There is a niche (especially in Australia) for well priced fun sports coupes, which is what Alfa Romeo used to make (yes I know they used to make the best and fastest cars in the world in the 30's but that market now is satuated) and do it well.

 TRIPOLI 1933
Birkin was followed by Nuvolari, Giuseppe Campari (works Maserati 8C-3000), Goffredo Zehender (Raymond Sommer-entered Maserati 8CM) who started from the fifth row, pole-sitter Premoli, and the rest of the pack.
Campari and Birkin then entered into a personal agreement to foil the efforts of the "conspirators." Gazzabini was very unpleasant towards Varzi and Nuvolari, heaping scorn on them and making threats.
Varzi was quite aware that Campari and several others were counting on the often heated rivalry between himself and Nuvolari to result in the both of them taking each other out of the race.

 Raymond Sommer
During the war Sommer was a member of the French Resistance, but at the end of hostilities he brought out the Alfa Romeo 308 he had campaigned before the war and found immediate success, beating the 158 Alfettas at St Cloud, before joining Maserati, unsuccessfully, for 1947.
In 1933 he joined the Maserati team while continuing to race his Alfa in sports car events and, sharing with Nuvolari, he won the Le Mans 24 Hours for a second time.
The following year he bought an Alfa Romeo 8C and, when his team mate Luigi Chinetti became ill, Sommer drove 20 of the 24 hours at Le Mans to win.

 Maserati - Targa Florio
There were only sixteen runners in the 1932 Targa Florio run over eight laps of the 44.7 mile Little Madonie circuit, and the sole Maserati entry was Ruggeri #8 with a Tipo 8C-2800.
Ruggeri brought his Maserati 8C-2800 across the line in fifth place, thirty-five minutes behind the winner.
Five Maseratis were entered, described by Motor Sport as 'the greatest road race of the year'; the 2-litre Tipo 26B cars were driven by Ernesto Maserati, Diego De Sterlich/ Piero Bortolini #48 and Baconin Borzacchini, while 1.5-litre versions were handled by Luigi Fagioli and Marano.

THE GOLDEN ERA OF GP RACING 1934-40 - DRIVERS (S)
During the 1934 seasom Team Whitney Straight entered their white and blue painted Maserati 8CM cars in the major GP races, Straight transporting the team members with his own airplane.

Sommer is surely Grand Prix racing's greatest individualist, as he refused any major offer for a works drive, preferring to be his own man. Of course that decision showed up in the results, as Sommer often tried the impossible task to challenge the latest works cars with antique equipment.
