Maserati - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Today, Maserati is owned directly by the Italian car giant Fiat, after having been a part of Ferrari (a company in which Fiat has a majority stake) for some years.
In 1937 the remaining Maserati brothers sold their shares in the company to the Orsi family, who in 1940 relocated the company headquarters to their hometown of Modena, where it remains to this day.
Maseratis are once again being sold in the lucrative United States market, and the company has also re-entered the racing arena with their Trofeo and, in December 2003, the Maserati MC12 (formerly known as the MCC), which took part in select GT races in 2004.

 The Maserati Bora
Maserati tradition demanded many important qualities during the designing of the Bora, the car had to stylish yet solidly built, it had to be fast and reliable and above all it had to be refined and comfortable.
The Maserati tradition of quality build and passenger comfort came at a price for although the Bora was shorter and lower than the Ghibli (its wheelbase was in fact some 50mm longer), it weighed some 180 kg more.
According to the 'Catalogue Raisonné 1926-1990' by Gianni Cancellieri, 9 Boras were built in 1971, 220 in 1972, 157 in 1973, 85 in 1974, 29 in 1975, 12 in 1976, 15 in 1977 and 3 in 1978.

The Bora used a quad-cam V8 which produced 310bhp in its initial 4719cc form (1971-76), later cars (1976-78) used an even more powerful 4930cc unit which developed 320bhp.
The Bora had a pretty two door coupe body which housed the engine in the central position.

 The Maserati Merak
For Citroën and Maserati this made practical sense, as at the time there was a move towards producing lower capacity high performance cars with a lower fuel consumption, and here was yet another opportunity for the inclusion of more Citroën components.
The Merak like the Bora, was in all its versions, a sports car that was comfortable and easy to drive: the controls were very docile and for a GT of this type it had good all-round visibility; the engine was very responsive but never "brutal" and its road-holding and handling were excellent.
According to the 'Catalogue Raisonné 1926-1990' by Gianni Cancellieri, 17 Meraks were built in 1972, 430 in 1973, 334 in 1974, 102 in 1975, 139 in 1976, 142 in 1977, 153 in 1978, 194 in 1979, 150 in 1980, 101 in 1981 and 4 in 1982.

The car failed to qualify for the Indy 500 (where a Maserati had won in 1939 and 1940), and at the "Trophy of the Two Worlds," Stirling Moss did his best, receiving a terrible scare when his steering collapsed on the banking.

Helped by funding from the new owners, Citroen, the Bora (Tipo 117) debuted at the Geneva Motorshow in 1971.
A completely new design, it followed the trend of designing mid-engined sportscars with a quad cam alloy 4.7-litre V8 (with four twin choke Weber DCNF carburettors) mounted longitudinally behind the occupants and bolted to a ZF transaxle.
From 1975 a 4.9-litre engine was fitted (for the US market, this came to Europe in 1977), and despite a lack of further development (due to financial difficulties) production continued until 1979.
