On leaving Payne, the trio made their debut in February 1969 at a Montreal club, the Laugh In, and soon after gave the first rock concert heard at the NAC.
The bass guitarist Brian Edwards was added, and the name of an exotic hallucinogen adopted, prior to the release in 1970 of the band's first LP, Mashmakhan (Col ELS 365).
The international success of the single 'As the Years Go By,' a pop song atypical of the band's venturesome, improvisational style, led to concerts in the USA and Japan, including a Tokyo appearance in 1971 before an audience of 40,000.

The name of the band was changed to Mashmakhan, after a type of drug being peddled by a local dealer, to become more hip with the young people, and the journey began.
Mashmakhan was one of two contributors to the musical score of the 1971 NFB film Epilogue/Fieve and recorded the song "Couldn't Find the Sun" for the movie.
Mashmakhan's second album, The Family, was released in 1971, and bombed; fan support was lost, and despite a couple of good singles, they did not have the right formula to make it back to the top.

Edwards rejoined the band and they changed their name to Mashmakhan, after a type of drug being peddled by a local dealer.
Pierre Senecal's "As Years Go By" was released off the first album in an edited form, and was the group's first hit; it sold 100,000 copies in Canada and 500,000 copies in the U.S. The single also sold 1,000,000 copies in Japan which lead to a tour there which received Beatlemania-like adulation.
In 1971 Mashmakhan was one of two contributors to the musical score of the NFB film 'Epilogue/Fieve' which was directed by William Pettigrew.

For the first time on CD format, Collectables Records released both Mashmakhan albums (minus one inferior song from the Family album due to time restraints) together in one package.
Looking back, Mashmakhan was ahead of their time; they did progressive rock for a commercial audience when prog was supposed to be for the underground.
They incorporated flutes and strings in songs when hard rock was dominant, and they were one of the first Canadian acts to become international stars.

Okay, so they only really put out one album and Grateful Dead bootlegs have sold more copies, but Mashmakhan is just about the highest quality set of musicians to emerge from the late-sixites/early-seventies.
Although Mashmakhan's lyrical content is relatively amateurish and overly cerebral, the rhythmic structure echoes that of Santana and their chord and melodic patterns often through the listener a delightful and unexpected loop.
This album has some excellent Mashmakhan tunes, but it is sadly missing one of the best, MR.

I've just been very much enjoying the guitar pyrotechnics of Mashmakhan's 'One Night Stand', a regular 'Free Bird' of a song.
I can imagine that there may be 7" records that play at 33.1/3 that are even longer, but how close together do those poor little microgrooves have to be to accommodate 7.40 of music played at 45rpm!

After adding Jerrry Mercer on drums they played the Montreal B circuit for the next five years under several names, including The Phantoms, The Dominoes and Ray Blake's Combo.
The members drifted off to other interests, including Mercer joining Roy Buchanan and then The Wackers before going on to serve as the backbeat for April Wine to this day.
Senecal kept Mashmakhan going and by mid 1972 had added Brian Greenway and Steve Laing, who both would later also join April Wine and drummer Lorne Nehring.

They had a minor hit covering the Beatles song "Eleanor Rigby." Meanwhile, Andrew, who began writing in 1969, was paying his dues on the westcoast.
