Sources in Mashonaland contacted by phone from Harare have said there was a lot of tension among the people as the counting of the votes got under way today.
During the two days of balloting in Mashonaland, MDC supporters said they were afraid to come out in the open, and attended Zanu-PF meetings for their own safety.
Thousands of his supporters were bussed in from all over the province and from the capital, Harare, to hear him say they would bury the MDC and all their puppets with a resounding win in the election.

Mashonaland set hosts Matabeleland a target of 465 after the visiting captain Tatenda Taibu hit a century on the third day of the Logan Cup at BAC yesterday.
Mashonaland declared on 3534 in their second innings as Matabeleland continued to falter, losing two wickets with 34 runs on board in pursuit of the target.
Mashonaland were helped by a partnership of 97 for the second wicket and 130 for the fifth.

Mashonaland Central, the one area apparently where a clear majority wanted to see Zanu-PF stay in power, was also the area with the highest index of community pressure.
The lowest figure was in Mashonaland West where 20 per cent of respondents said it would be difficult or impossible to vote differently from such people.
When we looked at the data in provincial terms (Table 42), this feature of political life was particularly acute in the three Mashonaland provinces, where up to one in three respondents said it would be impossible to carry on living in their present neighbourhood if their political views were different.

 Zimbabwe Farmer Shot And Killed
Mashonaland Central - Charles Anderson (early 40's), a farm manager, was shot and killed at noon today by unknown assailants.
One of the children is said to have received a minor injury perpetrated by one of the four intruders.
The farm, Dunmaglas of Norfolk Estate, is 378 hectares in extent and is in the Glendale/ Mazowe farming area of Mashonaland Central.

Mashonaland did retain their title but throughout the season there were matches that saw the big teams on the receiving end.
Although the key players in the Midlands and Manicaland sides were "signed" from Harare, it was a dose of refreshing news that Zimbabwe at last had a first-class competition that could ignite serious competition.

Of concern is the fact that provinces such as Mashonaland West and East as well as Midlands and Matebeleland North have a high prevalence of diseases such as cholera and malaria and yet they have the highest percentage of people who walk long distances to the nearest health centre.
