Mashramani - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mashramani, sometimes abbreviated to "Mash", is an annual festival that celebrates Guyana's 1966 independence from the United Kingdom.
The word "Mashramani" is derived from an Amerindian language and in translation means "the celebration of a job well done".
On 23 February 1970 the Festival called "Mashramani" was a huge success with people drawn from all Regions of Guyana to Linden welcoming Guyana's status as a republic with over three days of frolic and fun.

 Whither Mashramani?
Mashramani, which was celebrated on Monday, is Guyana's national event in the tradition of popular festivals across the Caribbean.
Mashramani, therefore, developed around the calypso, later soca, steel band, costumed bands, floats, road march, street revels and the crowning of a calypso king.
The most artistic and promising element in Mashramani is still the children and schools' competitions in dance, dramatic poetry and costumes, although the contest for the very young children is poorly stage-managed.

 Caribbean Beat: Archives
Mashramani, essentially Guyana’s annual birthday bash, began in the mining town of Mackenzie (50 miles south of Georgetown, along the Demerara River), four years after Guyana’s actual independence in 1966.
Accounts vary, but it seems that “mashramani” was a corruption of either “masromani” or “mashirimehi”, supposedly an Amerindian word (no one identified which tribe) for the celebration held after a co-operative community effort.
For a few years in the mid-1990s, Mashramani seemed to lose some of its glitz; the formerly huge crowds dwindled, and there was talk of the festival being called off.
