Mashups find new uses for current digital technology, a new iteration of the cause-and-effect relationship behind almost every change in pop-music aesthetics: the gear changes, and then the music does.
Making a mashup with that song means the label issuing the mashup has to convince all the publishers involved to take a reduction in royalty—otherwise, it won’t be profitable for the label.
See mashups as piracy if you insist, but it is more useful, viewing them through the lens of the market, to see them as an expression of consumer dissatisfaction.

Any DJ worth his salt has one or two good mashups in his quiver, but lately, so many DJs have been exclusively relying on their mashups that this genre is feeling a little played-out.
It blends musical styles and dances, historical periods with howling anachronisms, coy, almost childish gimmicks with R-rated sex and violence and "The Cotton Club" with "Six Feet Under." Think of it as a 1930s remix.

Home remixing is technically incredibly easy to do, in effect turning the vast world of pop culture into source material for an endless amount of slicing and dicing by desktop producers.
So easy, in fact, that bootlegs constitute the first genre of music that truly fulfills the "anyone can do it" promises originally made by punk and, to lesser extent, electronic music.
Pop culture in general seems more and more remixed -- samples and references are permeating more and more of mainstream music, film, and television, and remix culture appears to resonate strongly with consumers.

A mashup is where an artist (usually a DJ or other audio-hacker) takes two or more (preferably from different genres) songs and mixes them together, producing something that is altogether different, while paying homage to and often enhancing the source material.
