Mask, MP3 Album Music Download at eMusic
In this way, this track is the hinge of the entire album, bringing in the voices of not only jazz, but of folk music and those not yet created -- speaking in poetic, sensual languages and whispering in nuances that are unmitigated by jazz, folk music, or improvisation; yet they exist because of them.
"Mask" is a four-part work which is too complex -- yet glorious -- to go into here; one would need an entire essay to devote to the beauty and mystery of its articulation.
With this album as only the latest evidence in tow, Cryptogramophone is issuing some of the most exciting, appealing, and unclassifiable music today.

I still love Loreena's early albums, but her later albums, especially The Mask and Mirror and The Book of Secrets blur for me. Loreena has a stunning voice and a great sense of arranging her music so it doesn't lose its edge or sound sentimental, especially in her earlier recordings.
Her first handful of albums were good, but pretty much the same kind of stuff...which gets tedious after a while (this is getting into personal preference now: my biggest issue with celtic trad--which I love--is that it's really difficult for me to *listen* to it since it, all too often, sounds the same).
The amount of research she puts into each album is unprecedented (just look at the liner notes), and the result is a rich tapestry of elements from different musical traditions that you wouldn't necessarily expect to hear woven together.

Basically, this album shows that Bauhaus was a group of talented, creative guys that all shared a morbid sense of humor, a passion for the bizarre, but were in no way a contrived bunch of goth types.
This second album by Bauhaus continued the band's exploration of the gothic sensibility that they had so brilliantly pioneered on their debut.

With instrumental backing sounding like a post-high school garage band attempting a combination of rock phrasing and written lines with revolutionary free jazz improvisation, and a delirious singer sounding gruffer than genuinely dissatisfied bluesmen, its intensity is remarkable.
It is one of the very few unnecessary or weak songs on the album, but not offensve by any means.
While the next few songs may seem buried in the sprawling album, they are more gems, equal to anything else on the record.

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART (AND THE MAGIC BAND) Trout Mask Replica reviews and MP3
The standout tracks on this album are, in my humble opinion, "Frownland", a weird intro that follows one set path and kicks off as soon as you press play, an odd intro to such an epic album, especially one of prog rock as it has no kind of build up.
The lyrics on this album are a mixed bag, most of them feel improvised and some of them feel well rehearsed, but they all have this feeling of magic among them, because you don't know where the music will turn next.
It's certainly not a good album to dance to, it's certainly not a good album to play "air-guitar" to, it's certainly not a good album to create a nice atmosphere, it's nothing and everything at the same time and that makes it the most wicked album I have ever heard in my entire life.

Robert Quine at the I-94 Bar part two
Once in awhile, I listen to "The Blue Mask" and can’t help wondering, "Gee, wouldn't it be great to go into the studio for a week or so and make another great record?" It’s been 15 years since I quit, and the anger I felt has pretty well dissipated.
I did a few albums for artists that never got released, some jingles, and a lot of demos, most of which came out on CD one way or another.
I'd like to recommend two albums because they're great and won’t be in print forever: "Buch and the Snakestretchers" (the Burlap Bag album)—just a bar band recorded live in '71, but probably his best playing on record; and "Malegueña" — a lot of obscure stuff, mainly of interest because it contains his last session.

Captain Beefheart, is one of these mythical characters, and the story behind his 1969 album, Trout Mask Replica, is one of rock's grand legends.
Beefheart supposedly wrote the entire double LP by himself in an eight-hour stretch at the piano and subsequently taught it to the Magic Band, a group of untrained musicians who somehow latched onto and perfected a bunch of songs that continue to baffle most musicians today.
