The median income for a household in the county is $30,195, and the median income for a family is $37,257.

George Mason (December 11, 1725 – October 7, 1792) was a United States patriot, statesman, and delegate from Virginia to the U.S. Constitutional Convention.
In 2000 the county population was 16,800 in a land area of 241.11 square miles, an average of 69.7 people per square mile.
Mason county is located on the northeastern edge of the Bluegrass region along the Ohio River.

Mason County was created by an act of the Virginia General Assembly on January 2, 1804, from parts of Kanawha County.
During the early 1700s, the Ohio River valley, including present-day Mason County, was primarily used as hunting grounds by the Ohio-based Shawnee, the Mingo, who lived in both the Tygart Valley and along the Ohio River north of Mason County, and the Seneca, one of the largest and most powerful members of the Iroquois Confederacy.
