Bees are adapted for feeding on nectar and pollen, the former primarily as an energy source, and the latter primarily for protein and other nutrients.
Bees periodically stop foraging and groom themselves to pack the pollen into specialized pollen baskets which are on the legs of honeybees and some other species, and on the ventral abdomen on other species.
The primary purpose of a drone bee is to fertilize a new queen.

 The Orchard Mason Bee
The mason bee is native to the Pacific Northwest and ideally suited to the sometimes wet rainy and cool springs, emerging earlier in the season and working on days that are too rainy for the honeybee.
Since the mason bees life is devoted solely to laying eggs gathering pollen for it's young they are extremely efficient at pollination.
When the spring bloom comes you will start to see the mason bees hatching from their nesting blocks, they are not frightened by people so be sure to watch them as they go about their work.

In the last four years, fruit pollination has declined in proportion to a drop in wild honey bee populations in suburban B.C. Wild honey bees account for a large percentage of plant pollination, but the wild honey population is declining because of an increasing problem with mites in its colonies.
Dogterom's study compared the amount of pollen carried by four different types of bees: the honey, bumble, alfalfa leaf cutter and mason bees; it also compared the cost effectiveness of pollinating high-bush blueberry orchards with each type of bee and the cost of commercially producing each of the bees.
However, Dogterom has scores of mason bees and nests she would like to see find fruit-filled homes by the beginning of March on Vancouver Island and the middle of March in the Lower Mainland.

The orchard mason bee (Osmia lignaria) is a gentle beneficial insect that has potential as a pollinator of apples, cherries, and other tree fruits.
Efforts are being made experimentally to develop large populations of these bees to use as a supplement to honey bees for fruit pollination, much as the alfalfa leafcutting bee was developed for alfalfa seed pollination.
Developing large populations of the bees may be a slow process under orchard conditions; the short duration of bloom does not allow the bees to accomplish maximum reproduction.
