Maspeth is a neighborhood in west central Queens (1991 pop.
The first European settlement in Queens County (1642), it was attacked by the Indians in 1643 and abandoned in 1644.
The Long Island Expressway and the belt of cemeteries nearby isolated and the northern section of Maspeth from northern and central Queens and kept it suburban; the side streets were lined with one-family detached houses.
