Topic: Masquerade (book)

 The Abstract Masquerade
The idea of the masquerade is often associated with a formal type of party scene with people in costumes carrying on sophisticated conversation, but in fact, in most instances, this was not the case.
Terry Castle, in her book Masquerade and Civilization, equivocates the event with love commenting that it was a "revocation of love itself that love conceived as a profound mingling of opposites, an absorptive, endlessly satisfying embrace of self and other" [6].
The masquerades were places where sexuality of any combination could occur, and even cases of incest were not beyond the scope of what may have happened.

Begun by Count Heidegger and continued by Theresa Cornelya, masquerades were wildly popular in part, as Terry Castle establishes in Masquerade and Civilization, because they permitted guests to shed the rigidly constructed identities of the rule-bound eighteenth century in favor of flagrant new disguises.
In these works, masquerade is a temporary but necessary device toward an ending in which much is revealed about the primary characters; this can lead to a celebration and marriage, as in Marriage a la Mode, or to a state as confusing as masquerade itself, as in Fantomina.
Although the masquerades are quickly discovered, this scene shows the male lovers to be fools because they fail to recognize their lovers in disguise; and gives the women agency to openly express and act upon their sexual desires in ways that they are otherwise prohibited from engaging in earlier in the play.

The classic text on eighteenth century masquerade, this book puts forth the key idea that masquerade enabled self-meditation, some freedom particularly for women, and a general state of "anti-decorum".
Castle finds that while satirists claimed that the social practice of masquerade at Londo balls created a state of anti-decorum, several authors of satire such as Dryden and Fielding incorporate masquerade into their literary texts as a device to suggest larger themes such as pleasure, sex, and the unknown, something both pernicious and delightful.
Claims that while the eighteenth century masquerade, used as a literary device, can sometimes enable women to behave more freely, as Castle claims, it also must conform to dominant culture and often causes women in masquerade to be objectified and fetishized by men.

VII. Containing the Whole Humours of a Masquerade. Book XIII. Fielding, Henry. 1917. The History of Tom Jones, a ...
Jones had never less inclination to an amour than at present; but gallantry to the ladies was among his principles of honour; and he held it as much incumbent on him to accept a challenge to love, as if it had been a challenge to fight.
This mask was one of those ladies who go to a masquerade only to vent ill-nature, by telling people rude truths, and by endeavouring, as the phrase is, to spoil as much sport as they are able.
The lady presently after quitted the masquerade, and Jones, notwithstanding the severe prohibition he had received, presumed to attend her.

The book is out of print, but copies can still be located--and whether it was due to the complexity of the first book's puzzle, the time limit, or a combination of the two, I think the second book is much easier to solve than the first.
Locating a copy of the book is easier than I thought thanks to the Advanced Book Exchange, so for those of you who would like to give it a shot, I will not reveal the answer here.
The only titled copy of the book was contained in the marquetry box which was the prize and the segment of honeycomb with the bee was supposed to be removed to reveal the title--in the heat of the studio lights it could not be opened!

Book Review: Masquerade, by Kit Williams
This book contains fifteen very detailed one- or two-page paintings rendered in the fantastic style typical of a high quality children's book, together with a dreamy story containing characters such as Jack Hare, Tara Tree-tops and the Lady Moon.
The solution to Masquerade is simplicity itself, and is fully in keeping with the nature of the book: namely, a picture book.
After the announcement that the hare was unearthed, many fanatical Masqueraders tried to prove that their approaches could lead to the correct solution.

Altered Books :: Altered Books Gallery
Altered books have been defined as "any book, old or new that has been recycled by creative means into a work of art." The first time I saw an example of this intriquing art form, it immediately sparked my interest.
Now I use books as my canvas-- to create altered books, reliquaries, or book sculptures that are personally meaningful and that spring from my own imagination or eminates from the spirit and words of the book's original author.
When the International Association for Altered Book Artists put out the call for people interested in providing classes for its members, I offered to teach a series of poetry writing workshops for those who want to put their own original poems in their altered books.

In Cindy Davis’ new book, Final Masquerade, Paige Carmichael is a woman on the run from the mob.
It seems a bit awkward at first, as the book opens in the midst of the action, but not knowing much about Paige actually adds to the reader’s feelings of anxiety and isolation as Paige tries to outsmart the mob and secure a new life for herself, making for affective fiction.
The book never meanders into unrealistic plot twists; the drama of an ordinary woman finding herself in an extraordinary situation is suspenseful enough, and Cindy Davis has written a novel sure to keep readers turning pages long past their bedtimes.
