Dust defelector for silicon mass airflow sensor - Patent 4981035
The silicon sensing element of a mass airflow sensor is shielded from direct impact by large dust particles by means of a plastic deflector that is disposed in spaced upstream relationship to the entrance of a by-pass venturi containing the sensor.
Sensor 22 is able to provide an accurate measurement of the flow through the by-pass venturi, and flow through the by-pass remains correlated with the total flow through the air body so that accuracy of the measured airflow can still be attained.
The cooperative effect of deflector 26 with sensing element 24 and member 34 is such that a portion of the airflow through the by-pass is caused to flow in the channel 44 created between the deflector and the mounting member and thereby pass over the flush-mounted sensing surface of the sensing element.

Electronic mass airflow sensor circuit and method for manufacturing same - Patent 5508491
As previously mentioned, the primary and secondary sensor elements 22,24 are suspended within the metallic or plastic housing of the mass airflow sensor and are the key to proper sensor operation.
As a result, primary sensor element 22 is also referred to as the "hot" element and is shown having a resistance value of R.sub.H. In contrast, secondary sensor element 24 functions at ambient air temperature during operation of the mass airflow sensor.
In the mass airflow sensor manufactured by the method of the present invention, however, thick film resistor 26, connected in series with secondary sensor element 24 to form combination element 28, is subsequently sized via laser trimming.

A sensor usually located in the intake of fuel injected engines which measures pressure inside the intake manifold.
A signal from the airflow sensor is sent to the vehicle's computer to determine the amount of fuel necessary.
Sensors at each sense wheel lockup and automatically modulate hydraulic pressure to the affected wheel, which is better than driver modulation because a driver can modulate a brake system, but not control a single brake at a particular wheel.

A mass flow sensor responds to the amount of a fluid (usually a gas) flowing through a chamber containing the sensor.

Mass Airflow Sensor in my 97 Protege
I've been told that it has a broken Mass Airflow Sensor, and the cost to replace it will be around $1500: only about $35 is for the labour.
Biggest source of damage to MAF sensors is a poorly fitting or missing air filter that allows unfiltered air to contaminate the sensor.
I'm still searching for aftermarket alternatives and I'm wondering if I wouldn't be better off searching for a MAF Sensor for a 93-97 Miata, as the part appears to be the same according to onlinemazdaparts.com, and there generally seem to be more places dealing in miata parts as opposed to protege parts.

Mass AirFlow Sensor article   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
The MAF sensors used on many of today's cars primarily use the two-wire, hot/cold wire, setup to detect the mass of the air passing through it.
This is why when a MAF transfer function, the data stored in the computer about the sensor, is derived for one vehicle it may not be identical to the transfer function for a similar vehicle with the same exact sensor.
If there is airflow noise at the flatter portion of the curve, the noise voltage is a much greater percentage of the total voltage being sent to the computer and the computer may balk.
