A mass market paperback is a small, non-illustrated, and relatively cheap version of a book, usually coming out after the hardback and often sold in airports and supermarkets as well as in bookstores.
Mass market paperbacks are distinguished from hardbacks also by the different business practices that publishers and booksellers apply to them.
The mass market paperbacks sold in airport newsstands have given rise to the vaguely defined literary genre of the "airport novel", bought by travellers to while away the hours of sitting and waiting.

Bookselling Online: The Evolving mass-market paperback
Mass market paperbacks, virtually worthless to all but the Amazon penny-seller, are undergoing a transformation.
Publishers are beginning to introduce a new, larger format for their mass market titles.
While this new category will cost slightly more than the mass-market (but less than the trade), it is unlikely that these books will have the same success as large print books in the used marketplace.

And while Sarah's dealing specifically with mysteries, I should point out that if it's an author's intention of being read, the mass market paperback route might yield better results than a hardcover or even a TPB -- assuming, of course, that a regular audience picking up a book at an airport is the audience.
Beyond this, the most immediate example of an author using the MMP route that comes to mind is Gregory McDonald, whose Fletch books were released solely in paperback and drew an audience this way.
I almost always buy trade paperbacks, which are lighter and cheaper than the hardcovers but have larger text and more margin room for notes and underlining.

Fantastic Metropolis » The Disappearance of the Literary SF Mass-Market Paperback
In 1989, the literary SF mass-market paperback was already showing signs that it was on its way to becoming an endangered species.
Bantam had started to experiment with marketing and packaging the paperbacks of some of its more literary SF authors (John Crowley, Lucius Shepard) in what was becoming a lucrative format and genre for publishers, the literary trade paperback.
These Bantam books were not marketed as SF, though the covers of this unsuccessful, short-lived line were cleverly designed in a way to potentially appeal to both mainstream and genre readers.
