Can MASSMoCA become a breadwinner for the Berkshires?
For seven years, The Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASSMoCA) has been a red-brick castle in the western New England sky, but now the grandiose plan to transform a vacant 28-building factory compound into a high-tech arts center is about to become a reality.
But doubts were raised that North Adams could sustain a 13.5-acre showcase for esoteric Minimal and Conceptual art, and the project foundered as organisers were unable to attract $15 million in matching funds required by the State.
Thompson is one of but two full-time employees at MASSMoCA, and the only works of art on-site are a Mario Merz "igloo" loaned from the Guggenheim, and a cache of photographs donated by photojournalist Lucien Aigner.

Wharton Alumni Magazine, Winter 2000 - Modern Art With Mass Appeal
Being put on hold at MassMOCA, it would seem, is diagnostic of the larger MassMOCA experience: off-center, daring, provocative, and according to the critics, something to be admired.
MassMOCA is the largest center of its kind in the nation, a sprawling complex of 27 ren-ovated,once-abandoned factory buildings — 220,000 square feet of space in all — with a dramatic array of on-loan art including a Rauschenberg that fills a gallery the size of a football field.
The idea of MassMOCA was conceived by Thomas Krens, then director of the Williams College Museum of Art in Williamstown, Massachusetts, who envisioned the country’s largest museum for contemporary art.

Mass MOCA - The Mohawk Trail
MASSMoCA refers to itself as a permanent work in progress; this is fitting, considering the facility's history.
Though it is a distinctly modern facility, designed by the respected architectural firm of Bruner/Cott & Associates, every effort has been made to ensure that MASSMoCA will integrate high tech amenities with the vital historical and cultural zeitgeist of New England, paying homage to the strong industrial character of the mill.
Phase I of the ongoing MASSMoCA project includes art galleries, performing arts facilities, rehearsal areas, office spaces, fabrication facilities, live studio space for artists-in-residence, pre- and post-production facilities for multi-track audio, video, and film, restaurants, cafes, and retail shops.

A Day at MassMOCA - Laughing Meme
I've been told with MassMOCA the show is everything, the curating can soar to heights of brilliance, but apparently maintaining the altitude proves tricky.
My worries felt confirmed when we walked into the show and were confronted with sophomoric video art that expressed the artists desire to "break free of the conservative and oppressive Viennese art regime", and a painter of abstracts that cheerfully embraced the appellation, "decorative".
MassMOCA is in the back of beyond so that they can have a really huge space cobbled together out of those great abandoned New England factory buildings.

Urban Alchemy: In Search of a Formula for the City of Tomorrow
While MassMoCA fits Thompson's description as "an open platform where some of the best artists alive today come and work across platforms, making, showing and teaching," it integrally engages with local schools, audiences and businesses, all of whom have a stake and have made commitments to it.
In addition to the 200,000 square feet of exhibition space that has thus far been renovated, and 50,000 feet of performing-arts space, 60,000 feet are leased to businesses, with another 70,000 feet soon to go on the market.
MassMoCA and the Village of Arts and Humanities, on the other hand, appear to consciously address both the human and the physical conditions of their communities.

The Original Unofficial Steve Earle Site
The group show at MASSMoca works somewhat at cross purposes with what these artists may have intended their work to do, but the Museum has become an agitprop showcase of sorts this summer, enticing the industrial-chic crowd up from the Berkshires and throwing jacked-up lawnmowers, architectural clothing, and “parasite mobile” housing units at them.
MASSMoca will extend the theme of interventionist art into its summer film series, kicked off by a little seen Marlon Brando film, the Ugly American, (1963), on July 2nd.
And, as part of MASSMoca’s fifth anniversary celebration, politically engaged musicians were featured on May 30th when the museum brought Carl Hancock Rux, Odetta, and Steve Earle to the stage.

Under Thompson’s leadership, the $31.4-million Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MassMOCA) opened to rave reviews after more than a decade of stubborn pursuit by Thompson that drew fully upon the business and artistic education of his joint degree from Wharton and Penn’s Graduate School of Fine Arts.
After taking over the stalled MassMOCA project from founder Thomas Krens, Thompson restructured the project and raised millions of dollars in private funds to create the largest center of its kind in the nation.
He kept moving ahead to surmount a series of obstacles, including the loss of state funding and problems with an asbestos-laden building, to open the doors of the $31.4-million center.
