Massachusetts State Highway 24 (Route 24) is a freeway (though not up to Interstate Highway standards) in Southeastern Massachusetts, linking Fall River with the Boston metropolitan area.
At this point, 79 exits and 24 continues north, ending at a junction with Interstate 93 in Randolph.
The original Route 24 from before 1951, is now known as Route 124 on Cape Cod.

Massachusetts citizens can find out for themselves, thanks to some enterprising students at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) who have developed a free online game called MassBalance (www.playmassbalance.com) that simulates the state budget process.
For instance, if funding for the Massachusetts Highway Department is cut by 50 percent (from $106 million to $53 million), a text warning at the bottom of the screen tells players the consequences: many of the state's roads and bridges deteriorate and become dangerous.
MassBalance was initially conceived by state Senator Richard T. Moore (D-Uxbridge) as a way to educate and engage Massachusetts' citizens with the details and complexities of balancing a budget that has a $3 billion hole in it.

It stayed out there for quite some time; the highway now numbered as 24 appears on my maps as existing from Fall River to Taunton in 1953 and to Brockton in 1956, but has no number.
By 1966, the highway was completed from Rt 24 southeast to Rt 28 past Middleboro; 25 was assigned to the highway.
My 1966-67 map shows it proposed to run as it does now, except that istead of making a turn at the very end to go to the Bourne Bridge, it instead ran more-or-less straight across to Rt 3 near the Plymouth-Barnstable County line.
