If Fred Frith were remembered only for being the guitarist in Henry Cow he would be just another shadowy figure in the history of art-rock.
Frith's bass, guitar and violin are prominent, yet merged into a whole that is stronger than its dovetailed parts, all held together by ingenuity and force of will.
Frith alternated conventional and homemade guitars, six-string bass, violin and keyboards while occasionally singing in a high-pitched voice.

Frith arrived at this variegated artistic state by way of formal violin training as a child, singing in the choir at church, self-initiated piano studies, and a deep immersion in blues, folk, and rock as a teenage guitarist.
However, even when those bands were extending the boundaries of songwriting, cross-genre experimentation, tape manipulation, and improvisation in rock, Frith was challenging himself on new frontiers.
Listening to Frith's recent recordings and compositions, dirt appears to be just one essential aspect of his broader concern – as a composer and a performer – with texture.

Frith was playing "table-top guitar." At one point he covered the guitar with layer after layer of cloths, and then began to strike the hidden guitar with mallets.
Frith's exploration of the ``table-top guitar'' and his use of household objects upon the guitar have permeated the music of creative guitarists all over the world to the point that it's unusual to see an improvising guitarist who doesn't at some point begin hammering upon the strings with an electric screwdriver or egg-beater!
Fred Frith's music touches some place very deep, and never fails to stir both the heart and the imagination of the listener.

Frith lived in New York for 14 years; some of his well-known ventures in that time included Massacre (with Bill Laswell and Fred Maher), Skeleton Crew (with Cora and Parkins), and his sextet Keep the Dog.

 Polestar Music Gallery: Fred Frith
Frith, who is among a handful of players who changed guitar improvising forever, has never performed solo in Seattle.
As important a figure as any in the expansion of rock into jazz and improvised music, the English guitarist co-founded the British avant-rock band Henry Cow (1968-78), and then on migrating to the U.S. moved to the center of improvising and experimental composition in New York.
There he formed the take-no-prisoners noise juggernaut Massacre with Bill Laswell and Fred Maher; Skeleton Crew with cellist Tom Cora and electric harpist Zeena Parkins; Keep the Dog, a sextet devoted to playing his own vast repertoire of compositions; and a Guitar Quartet.

When I was in high school, I saw Frith a lot around town as he was living in New York at the time and I saw him in many settings, mostly solo but also with John Greaves and Peter Blevgad (actually that was kind of jazzy as well) and Massacre.
Frith was a wonder - at this stage of his career he mixed his avant-guardisms with a delicious melodicism and snakey style that was not that far from Robert Fripp or Steve Hackett.
Frith is credited in the first Material album (Memory Serves) and is also the bass player of Zorn's Naked City (at least in the Nonesuch album I have), which confirms the comment about the "downtown vibe" from above.

Band is centered on the soaring English vocals of A.T. (he, like many Dutch, has almost no trace of an accent in English) and the tight, economical keyboard playing of Peter De Jong.
The band's tour de force in the early days, was a "metalized" rendition of Peter Gabriel's "On The Air" which was a crowd pleaser and earned them an encore at their Marquee debut.
All in all, the band produced three cassette EP's: Fate Not Choice (1988), Surface Tension (1989) for which they are best known; the title song (an Anthrax meets Rush hymn to the powers of deception) became their signature track, Deus Ex Machina (1990) and finally the full length album Thrown (1991).

Fred Frith / Ensemble Modern: Traffic Continues - PopMatters Music Review
Both pieces were written by composer/guitarist Fred Frith, and performed by Frith and the German New Music group Ensemble Modern.
While Frith is fairly well-known for is work with the group Henry Cow, and with the likes of saxophonist John Zorn (Naked City Band), bassist Bill Laswell (Massacre), and perhaps the all-time super-group for music nerds, French, Frith, Kaiser & Thompson, Frankfurt-based Ensemble Modern may need a bit of an introduction.
Rather than something tawdry or sickly nostalgic, what Frith and his musicians manage to do here is pay an interesting tribute to a musician who made a career out of playing progressive, experimental music and engaging in precisely the kind of new enterprise that is being actualized here.

BBC - Experimental Review - Fred Frith, Speechless
Speechless was Fred Frith's second album for the San Franciscan Ralph label, and was originally issued in 1981.
Frith piles up layers of sharp, melodic guitars, woozy mellotrons or mournfully folky violins, with reults that range from the infectiously melodic to the fearsomely dense.
At this point Frith was resident in New York, and had been nursing a more agressive, pared-down guitar style with the likes of Bill Laswell's Material and the superb power trio Massacre (also featuring Laswell and drummer Fred Maher).

 Speechless by Fred Frith CD
British guitarist and composer Fred Frith released a pair of albums at the beginning of the '80s--GRAVITY was the first, and SPEECHLESS was its successor.
Frith plays with a number of different ensembles (including Massacre and the French Etron Fou Leloublan), on an album that recalls material that he recorded in his previous bands, Henry Cow and The Art Bears.
The songs feature Frith's guitar and violin work and are textured by more saxophones than any of his previous material--a few numbers utilize a trio of reeds.

BBC - Experimental Review - Fred Frith, Gravity
Recorded in 1979, Fred Frith's first solo album proper after the demise of Henry Cow probably came as a bit of a shock to die hard fans.
Gravity however, was Fred's dance record; not the fashionable mutant disco of the early downtown New York scene (where Frith was in the process of setting up stall) but a celebration of rhythm that borrows from folk music, rock and God knows what else.
Likewise Fred's gleeful de/reconstruction of Martha and the Vandellas "Dancing in the Street"; a bizzarely harmonised guitar negotiates the melody over a boiling mass of feedback and tape manipulation (including a recording of Iranian demonstrators celebrating the capture of American hostages), eventually settling into a spare, gorgeous guitar solo over the closing chords.
