The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of two different quantities of botulinum toxin type A on the thickness and cross-sectional area and electromyographic changes in the masseter muscle using computed tomography and electromyographic measurement.
The thickness and cross-sectional area of the masseter muscle were measured at three positions before and 12 weeks after injection using computed tomography.
The electromyographic changes in the masseter muscle during maximum voluntary clenching were also evaluated before and 2, 4, 12, and 24 weeks after injection.

Masseter muscle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In human anatomy, the masseter is one of the muscles of mastication.
The deep portion of the muscle is partly concealed, in front, by the superficial portion; behind, it is covered by the parotid gland.
Along with temporalis, the masseter muscle is supplied by the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve.

 Masseter Muscle of the Face
Masseter is one of the most powerful muscles for its size in the body.
This muscle functions to chew food and derives its name from the Greek for chewing, and is associated with angry and aggressive states.
Masseter is innervated by the masseteric nerve of the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve (V) and is supplied with blood by the superficial temporal, maxillary, and facial arteries.

The masseter muscle, which is one of muscle of mastication, functions by attaching itself to the the mandible.
The masseter muscle functions by attaching itself to the mandible, and thus close correlation between the muscle and bone exists.
Thus, it is important to study the relationship between the masseter muscle and mandible to clarify the complex movement of the jaw.

During mastication the adult pig masseter contracts with a complex pattern involving a wave of electromyographic (EMG) activity moving from the ventro-rostral corner to the dorso-caudal corner.
EMG activity from different parts of the masseter was recorded along with oral movements in infant and juvenile pigs as they suckled, drank, and chewed on food and non-food objects.
Fetal masseters were oriented generally more horizontally than the masseters of older animals, except that the dorso-caudal corner, usually the most horizontal portion, is not developed in fetuses.

Therefore, we examined whether injection of glutamate into the masseter muscle induces pain in male and female volunteers and, since masseter afferent recordings were not feasible in humans, whether glutamate excites putative nociceptive afferents supplying the masseter muscle of male and female rats.
In rats of both sexes, glutamate (10 ?l, 0.5 M) evoked activity in a subpopulation of masseter muscle afferents (n=36) which projected to the subnucleus caudalis, an important relay of noxious input from the craniofacial region.
These results indicate that glutamate injection into the masseter muscle evokes pain responses which are greater in women than men and that one possible mechanism for this difference may be a greater sensitivity to glutamate of masseter muscle afferents in females.
