MASSOUD BARZANI, head of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, told the U.S. State Department on August 23 that he would appeal for help from Saddam Hussein if America failed to take decisive action to deter an imminent Iranian-backed offensive by the rival Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, led by Jalal Talebani.
According to his account, Barzani’s warning of the proposed appeal to Saddam was given directly by Barzani to Assistant Secretary of State Robert H. Pelletreau on August 23, at a time when KDP forces were under massive attack by Iranian-backed PUK forces.
Zebari’s defence, on the part of the KDP, is that Barzani’s party was the target of a conspiracy involving the PUK, Iran and independents such as the Sourchi tribe to take control of the whole of Kurdistan and to annihilate the KDP presence.
