Today Congressman Mike Capuano sent the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) a letter criticizing Massport's proposed Demand Management Program for Boston's Logan Airport and asked the FAA to inform Massport that no federal money can be used on its proposed runway until a workable Demand Management Plan is in place.
Massport's plan calls for a $150 surcharge on planes choosing to fly during peak travel times, a fee that is too low to be effective.
Massport should recognize this reality and submit to the FAA a plan that has some chance of actually working," stated Congressman Mike Capuano.

Massport, which claims its policy with IRI covered losses incurred by an interruption of business because of an order by a civil authority for up to two consecutive weeks, is seeking as much as three times the amount of damages, or approximately, $19.5 million, if the court finds IRI acted in bad faith.
Massport claims IRI's conduct constitutes "unfair and deceptive" practices -- which allows for the $6.5 million claim to be tripled should Massport triumph in court -- because IRI had required as a condition of coverage that Massport provide sensitive security information, which Massport says it is otherwise barred by federal law from disclosing.

Access road notwithstanding, this city needs MassPort, the quasi-public state agency that is running Worcester Regional Airport, to keep running the airport after its contract expires in 2005.
MassPort’s management agreement with the city dictates that plans for an access road must be in place by the end of 2004, which is why the City Council has recently started pushing the issue.
The cynical might say MassPort’s was motivated to take over Worcester Airport by its desire to build at Logan, and now that it has a favorable decision, it may lose that motivation and leave, access road or no access road.
