Masts of the Rugby VLF transmitter in England
In the case of a mast radiator or radiating tower, the whole mast or tower is itself the transmitting antenna.
A mast radiator is a radio tower or mast in which the whole structure works as an antenna.

Omnidirectional communications antenna - Patent 4155092
It is necessary that the radiating conductor or antenna used for receiving a signal is polarized in the same plane as the plane in which the transmitting antenna propagates its signal.
The antenna radiating elements lie in a common, generally horizontal plane, are circumferentially spaced one from the other, and are spaced outwardly and at a distance from a central support or hub structure and from supporting means which are secured to the central hub structure and which extend outwardly therefrom.
The radial extent of the stretcher arms 40 are substantially equal to those of the balun arms so that in plan view the radiator elements 12 resemble bent dipoles, each of which comprises a pair of integral quarter wave length segments which are at an angle of about 120.degree.

In level flight at the end of a 3 minute period at combat rating with the radiator shutter in minimum drag position the oil temperature is within requirements when corrected to temperate or tropical summer conditions, whilst the radiator suitability is within requirements for temperate but not for tropical summer conditions.

Radio frequency microwaves cannot penetrate steel and when an antenna is placed on steel, the energy that radiates towards the ground is reflected by the steel to the air.
There is signal loss between the antenna and the coupling box on the inside of the glass hence this type of antenna configuration will have inferior performance when compared to the same antenna with same antenna cable that is connected directly to the co-ax cable.
It is important to understand that an antenna's gain number and type of antenna mast (radiator) is less significant than how it is connected and where it is placed.

Hence, the angle radiators are arranged and shaped for a relatively loose coupling to the mast with its guy ropes.
Their influence on the radiation characteristics is highly critical if any non-insulated section of the guy-rope system has an electrical length which is exactly or approximately equal to a quarter-wave length.
In this context the azimuth distance of the angle radiators between the guy-ropes and the radial distance from the supporting mast are of utmost importance.

As a vertical radiator, the 5/8 wavelength antenna tends to compress its radiation toward the horizon, which is where you want it when you are working 2M.
By comparison, a 1/4 wavelength vertical radiator squirts too much RF energy at a high angle - not too useful unless you are trying to work aeronautical mobile stations.
And this type of radiator, it turned out, was not a complete stranger to me. In a horizontally polarized form, I had successfully used it in the 1960's as the driven elements in the W6GD "Extended-Expanded Collinear" array.
