Unknown to the western world for most of their history, the Master Musicians Of Jajouka were "discovered" in the 1950s by beat novelist William Burroughs and Paul Bowles, who recorded the band for the Library Of Congress.
Musicians are magicians in Morocco, and they bear the mark of the conjurer, the magic man. They are evokers of the djenoun forces, spirits of the ills and the flocks and above all; the spirits of music.
In the early 1990s, the Master Musicians Of Jajouka were led by Bachir Attar, whose father had led the group in the late 1960s.

Some short time after this trip, Jajouka unexpectedly came to me, in the shape of a self-styled sultan of Jajouka and his Czech born girlfriend, whose name escapes me, even though she also was on the trip to Jajouka.

The Master Musicians of Joujouka are a musical ensemble from the village of Joujouka near Ksar-el-Kebir in the Ahl Srif mountains in the southern Rif Mountains of northern Morocco.
One group, the 'Jajouka' faction, is led by Bachir Attar, whose father Haj Abdessalam Attar was the leader of the group in the 60s when Brian Jones and Ornette Coleman made their visits (it is this group I have written about here, and for reasons of pragmatism, I have used the 'Jajouka' spelling throughout).
Prior to the colonization of Morroco by France and Spain, the musicians were said to be the royal musicians of the sultans.
