Master boot record - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the IBM PC architecture the Master Boot Record (MBR), or partition sector, is the 512-byte boot sector, i.e.
The MBR of a drive usually includes the drive's partition table, which the PC uses to load and run the boot record of the partition that is marked with the active flag.
Because the i386 family of processors boot up in real mode, the sequence of machine language commands in the master boot record will be executed in real mode, even when the operating system to be loaded will spend most of its time in protected mode.

The Master Boot Record (MBR) and What it Does
The master boot record is always located at cylinder 0, head 0, and sector 1, the first sector on the disk.
If a Master Boot Record is found, it is read into memory at location 0000:7c00 and INT 19 jumps to memory location 0000:7c00 the same as was the case with the floppy.
The boot record program uses this data to determine the drive being booted from and the exact location of the partition on the disk.

 HIW: Master Boot Record
The MBR is the sector at cylinder 0, head 0, sector 1 of a hard disk.
If an active partition is found, that partition's boot record is read into 0000:7c00 and the MBR code jumps to 0000:7c00 with SI pointing to the partition table entry that describes the partition being booted.
The boot record program uses this data to determine the drive being booted from and the location of the partition on the disk.

 MBR - Master Boot Record
Master Boot Record An area of the outermost cylinder of a PC hard disk which contains the partition table.
MBR viruses normally enter a system through a floppy disk that is installed in the floppy drive when the computer is started up.
When booting from the hard drive, the BIOS or a special Firmware loads the contents of the MBR to a fixed address in the memory and allows it to take control.

Master Boot Record - MBR   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Short for Master Boot Record, MBR is also sometimes referred to as the "master boot block" and is the first sector of the computer hard disk drive used to determine from which partition a computer will boot.
The master boot record is located on the first sector of the hard drive; it's the first program the computer runs after performing a memory check and looking for a bootable disk (if set in CMOS).
The MBR is also susceptible to boot sector viruses that can corrupt or delete the MBR, which can leave the hard drive unusable and prevent the computer from booting up.

 Master Boot Record (MBR)
The master boot record is always located at cylinder 0, head 0, and sector 1, the first sector on the disk (see here for more on these disk geometry terms).
One of the partitions is marked as active, indicating that it is the one that the computer should use for booting up.
Since the master boot code is the first program executed when you turn on your PC, this is a favorite place for virus writers to target.

The hard disk is inaccesible after a diskette boot, since the operating system cannot find valid partition data in the Master Boot Record - attempts to use the hard disk result in the DOS error message "Invalid drive specification".
The changes to the Master Boot Record cannot be detected while the virus is active, since it rerouts the BIOS-level disk calls through its own code.
Using this table, the virus is able to move a diskette's original boot record and a part of its own code to a safe area on the diskette.

Define Master Boot Record - a Whatis.com definition - see also: MBR   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
The Master Boot Record (MBR) is the information in the first sector of any hard disk or diskette that identifies how and where an operating system is located so that it can be boot (loaded) into the computer's main storage or random access memory.
The Master Boot Record is also sometimes called the "partition sector" or the "master partition table" because it includes a table that locates each partition that the hard disk has been formatted into.
In addition to this table, the MBR also includes a program that reads the boot sector record of the partition containing the operating system to be booted into RAM.
