		Playwrights and players were further subject to the control of the master of the revels.
		It became the duty of the master of the revels to summon the companies before him and, after seeing them perform, to select such actors and such plays as he approved and order such changes to be made in the plays as, in his opinion, should render them suitable for performance before the sovereign.
		No play might be played or printed without his licence, and he had the power to a ter, to forbid and even (as the action of Sir Henry Herbert, master of the revels under Charles I, would seem to show) to destroy, any play he found objectionable.

		Until the 1730's the king's Lord Chamberlain was able to maintain much control over the theaters, companies, and plays in England because the Master of the Revels was his subordinate, and so drama was brought into his jurisdiction.
		The Master of the Revels was the English court official who supervised court entertainment, and the position grew in importance and prestige until the theaters were closed from 1642 to 1660 due to Puritan opposition.
		When the theaters reopened, the power of the master was slowly stripped as the Lord Chamberlain began to create an authority founded on traditions.

		During Shakespeare's career, his company had to get a licence* from the Master of the Revels to perform, or to print plays.
		One of the most striking examples of censorship in his plays was the forced omission from the first edition of Richard II of the whole scene of the deposition of Richard --it made rebellion seem too respectable.
		The City of London, controlled by puritan aldermen, had tried to prevent altogether the performance of plays, both in the city and the suburbs; it was actually to protect the players that Elizabeth gave the authority of censorship to the Master of the Revels in 1581.
