'Masterpiece Theater' revisits the 'Queen' in masterly fashion | The San Diego Union-Tribune
Not that this Sunday's "The Virgin Queen" isn't worthy of the 34-year history of "Masterpiece Theater" as TV's pre-eminent dramatic anthology series.
Still, this is the second time the life of Good Queen Bess has been dramatized on "Masterpiece Theatre," and she's not alone in the remake ranks.
If "Masterpiece Theatre" has seemed a little tired lately, it's not because the quality of the productions has eroded, but because the material is looking shopworn.

Masterpiece Theater is a long-running PBS anthology series, originally hosted by Alistair Cooke, that was spoofed on Sesame Street as "Monsterpiece Theater".
Though most of the "Monsterpiece" sketches ranged from classic literature to popular films and plays or even television shows, one of the earliest sketches was a spoof of an actual Masterpiece Theater series, Upstairs Downstairs.

Drawings and engravings of landscapes, illustrations for the Ivan Krylov fables, theater sketches, and drawings of animals are all presented at the show.

Any anthology of Alfred Hitchcock films that dares to call itself "The Masterpiece Collection" but doesn't include the acclaimed filmmaker's 1946 "Notorious" (to my mind the most perfect Hitchcock film ever), but does include the 1972 "Frenzy" (good late Hitchcock, but no masterpiece), is a little bit suspect.
-- but what "The Masterpiece Collection" has going for it is, if not depth, then variety.
Beginning with 1942's fl-and-white "Saboteur" and ending with the director's last film, "Family Plot" (1976), "The Masterpiece Collection" showcases Hitchcock's enormous range, from fl comedy (1955's "The Trouble With Harry") to straight-up horror (1963's "The Birds") to complex dramas of psycho-sexual pathology (1948's "Rope," 1960's "Psycho" and 1964's "Marnie").

The centerpiece of PBS's British programming was, and probably still is, Masterpiece Theater.
As a youth I assumed this was the name of the actual British series but eventually leaned that the programs were purchased separately and shown under the MT banner for the benefit of American audiences (a system they would employ again with great success with the Mystery series).
