"Masterpiece Theatre" followed up with later imports from the BBC such as "Poldark" and "I, Claudius" and some series from Britain's commercial network, ITV, such as "Upstairs, Downstairs." It was generally considered the highest quality series on American television.
"Masterpiece Theater" went into its second decade (1980's) with solid miniseries such as "The Citadel," "The Flame Trees of Thika" (said to be its most popular series), and "A Town Like Alice" from Australia (the first non-British series it aired).
"Masterpiece Theatre" is now in its fourth decade, a rare achievement for any kind of TV show anywhere.

In the mid-80's, when they stopped showing all multi-part masterpieces and started running a lot of one-shot TV movies that (1) were not dramatizations of great literature, (2) were often contemporary weepers and showcases for over-the-hill formerly-good British actors, and/or (3) substituted moody music and strange visuals for sustained narrative and character development.
I stopped watching Masterpiece Theatre some time in the early 90s, when the British seemed to lose their taste for elaborate period costumes and intricate multi-part adaptations of classic English literature.

Mitchell said the only obvious reason for the lack of a new sponsor is the show's high price tag, which "Masterpiece Theatre" executive producer Rebecca Eaton said is between $6 million and $8 million.
