Masters of Deception: The Gang That Ruled Cyberspace by Michelle Slatta and Joshua Quittner.
Masters of Deception is about a small group of young men, almost entirely teenagers still in high school, who in the late 1980s and early 1990s used their home computers (and woefully rudimentary ones at that) to penetrate deeply inside some of the country's most critical communications and financial networks.
It is worth remembering that at precisely the same time that the Masters of Deception were penetrating and exploring the intricacies of the computers controlling the telephone system, identical computer-controlled telephone systems were the indispensable link between our forces in the Persian Gulf.

Slatalla and Quittner do a great job of portraying the principals as both the powerful cyberspace masters they want to be and the scared, emotional young men they really are.
The 2 authors of Masters of Deception are apparently professional writers and they spend too much time trying to liven up what is essentially an account of high school and college kids playing on computers.
Masters of Deception brought to me, a teenager in the computer age, a wonderfully vivid description of what it was like to be a pioneer in the world of the Internet.

It's difficult to feel much besides amused admiration for the computer hackers spotlighted in "Masters of Deception: The Gang That Ruled Cyberspace," by Michelle Slatalla and Joshua Quittner, a married couple who are reporters for Newsday.
Among the Masters of Deception, as the gang is called, there is Paul Stira, nicknamed Scorpion, who as a child learned to program a computer even before he had his hands on one and went on to master the art of cracking computer-game copy-protection codes.
