At its peak in 1987 Mastertronic was the dominant computer games publisher in the UK, publishing most of the "budget market" (games retailing at £2.99 or less).
Mastertronic was exclusive wholesaler of computer games to Woolworth's, Toys'R'Us and other leading retailers.
Whilst in theory this is a breach of copyright, in practice not only have some of the authors publicly renounced their copyright, but nobody has any commercial interest in the titles.

Magic Knight is a computer game character created by freelance programmer David Jones in his 1985 game Finders Keepers for the Mastertronic budget label.
The game spawned three more ambitious sequels (also starring Magic Knight) on the Mastertronic Added Dimension budget label: Spellbound (1985), Knight Tyme (1986) and Stormbringer (1987).
The three sequels are far less action-orientated, being effectively graphic adventure games that use a basic menu system (dubbed "Windimation") to interact with characters and items instead of typed commands.

I've seen ST Mastertronics originals with the source code in the back side of the disk (not complete, because the front side was overwritten with the game).
I was pleasantly surprised to hear that mastertronic are still with us today (they did the PC re release of tomb raider, angel of darkness), i beleive they are now owned by sold out sales/marketing, previously owned by virgin (mr branson's crowd) and that mastertronic were the first euro/uk importers of sega master system...
