Matador Records - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Matador Records is an influential record label which is famous for a roster of highly-respected indie rock artists and bands.
Matador was started by Chris Lombardi in 1989 in his New York City apartment.
Recently, Matador has had to sidestep unwanted involvement in the current Recording Industry Association of America dispute over Peer-to-peer file sharing networks.

Onetime Homestead Records manager Gerard Cosloy joined Lombardi in 1990 and together the duo oversaw the growth of a small musical empire that has become universally admired for its unflagging commitment to artistic freedom and diversity.
Matador's offices in Manhattan's Soho district were one the hottest spots in independent music during the '90s, serving as the dissemination point for the music of Pavement, Yo La Tengo, the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Guided By Voices, Pizzicato Five, and countless others.
Now they've signed to Matador Records and are beginning their trek into the U.S. The droning dark moods are unceasingly melodic, invoking the shoegazing classics of the '80s.

audiography: Theme: Record Labels - Matador Records
Matador Records was started by Chris Lombardi in 1989 and was at first run from his New York apartment.
Matador is often labelled an “indie- cred rock” label, and though this to some extent certainly is true (they certainly have artists that are both indie, rock and critically acclaimed), Lombardi and Cosloy claim that their music taste is the only thing that dictates who they sign.
Matador is very much an example of that starting small, doing everything yourself (sometimes with a little money help from larger labels though) and signing bands you are fan of can be very effective.

Recorded at Memphis, TN's Ardent Studios over the summer by Stuart Sikes, 'The Greatest' while the most confident and life-affirming work of Chan Marshall's career, is as intensely personal, haunting and provocative as any of its predecessors.
There are two Cat Power songs plus a video on the new 'Matador At Fifteen' compilation: "Free" from the 'You Are Free' album, the rare "The Party" from the Japanese version of the album, and the video to "He War," directed by Brett Vapnek.
Shot from a great distance in gloriously grainy color, and recorded with all the ambient sounds of nature, this film in the tradition of Warhol and Wiseman is a fascinating document.

major labels: what's a mata, dor?
That "weight" is the credibility that Matador has built since they started in 1989, due in no small part to Cosloy's frequent and biting criticisms of major labels, their bands, and the indie labels that "go to bed with the majors." Apparently, the deal has worked for Atlantic.
The Matador deal is a "weird experiment," says Cosloy, "we'd like to be the exception to the rule—a major label deal that doesn't screw the bands or contribute to the homogenization of honest music...
The way we make records compared with the way they make records, ummm, the way we deal with bands, I mean, they aren't used to dealing with bands without managers and lawyers, they're not used to that kind of stuff.

Matador’s success soon extended into Europe -- in 1996, Matador Europe started releasing albums by American bands such as Modest Mouse, Sleater-Kinney, and Unwound (who do not appear on the American roster, but rather belong to their own separate labels) to the European public.
Matador Europe retained its separate offices while Beggars US moved in with Matador’s staff in New York.

Guide -- Matador's Indie Compilation Triumphs
Last year Matador Records gathered friends and family around to celebrate their 10th anniversary.
They've apparently expanded into hip-hop and electronic, as evidenced by the dope lyricism of Non Phixion and the Arsonists (the latter group is the next Wu-Tang, I swear) and the scary-ass drum-and-bass stylings of Jega (Yow!).
And despite the fact that it's not really a retrospective (although former Matador artists Guided By Voices are present despite having long since moved to TVT Records), the good offerings are, in fact, really good.

 Rock Bottom
Once the very center of the alterna-rock universe, premillennial Matador looks a lot like a throwback to the early nineties, when glum bands like Nirvana rocked the charts, flannel was all the rage, and "I'm a loser, baby" was the rallying cry of unambitious hipsters everywhere.
Matador's lately snagged such un-rockist fare as the techno act Boards of Canada and, more notably, the New York underground hip-hop act the Arsonists.
The latter signing, along with speculation that Matador is courting another underground hip-hop act, Non-Phixion, has prompted accusations that Matador is shadowing Rawkus -- a label that has found the kind of success with independent hip-hop that Matador enjoyed with indie rock in its mid-nineties heyday.

Guided By Voices - Earthquake Glue - Matador Records
Falling comfortably between Under The Bushes, Under The Stars and Mag Earwhig, this release seeks to take the studio know-how gained from their TVT Records stint and use it with writer and frontman Robert Pollard’s sometimes fractured vision of rock music.
The combination works surprisingly well, certainly better than it did on their previous outing, Universal Truths and Cycles which, although it was a very good recording in its own right, sounded constricted by the tenet of producing a saleable single.
I’d recommend Earthquake Glue to GBV fans (who probably already have it), but I’d also recommend it to anyone who is tired of the ever-splintering musical network, confused by which type, genus or species of rock music is the one they actually like.

The label has been home to such a strangely diverse collection of bands, artists, and freaks that it has become sort of an evil twin of the corporate music world that doesn't need major label partnerships anymore to make a dent in the music scene.

Two durable American indie labels, Merge and Matador, are each celebrating 10 years of operation with compilation records (Oh, Merge, and Music is Nice, respectively) and celebratory concerts.
Matador, based in New York City, has a snarky, slightly hip attitude, evidenced in its 10-year anniversary campaign, "Matador is Nice." This cheekiness extends to the staff, headed by co-owners Chris Lombardi and Gerard Cosloy.
Matador had the status of a label like Sub Pop, without being tied to one sound.

In '84 she founded Uzi, whose more daring and abrasive creations were released on the EP Sleep Asylum on Homestead Records (later re-released on Matador Records), but who, in keeping with tradition, had broken up by the time the record came out.
Thalia stuck with these experimental noise contemporaries of Sonic Youth for two albums and an ep before their breakup and her own personal demons led her back to Boston, where she founded Come with band mainstay Chris Brokaw.
They recorded four critically acclaimed albums for Matador, cementing their reputation as foremost purveyors of some of the most broodingly passionate music of the '90s.

Matador Records is known for its selection of outstanding musical artists -- the bands that are/were signed to them range from indie-rock legends to obscure gems.
Several indie-rock staples were signed onto Matador over the years, and they are given places of honor: the gone-but-never-forgotten Pavement, excellent Guided by Voices and Spoon, as well as other outstanding bands like The Fall, Cat Power, Superchunk and Yo La Tengo.
Matador plays it safe with some of the songs, such as Pavement and Teenage Fanclub, but also plays risky by including so many songs by little-known bands.
