Matakana Island is located in the western Bay of Plenty in New Zealand's North Island.
A long, flat island, it is 20 kilometres in length but rarely more than three kilometres wide.
The island protects the entrance to Tauranga harbour and stretches from Athenree to Mount Maunganui.

They're a tiny school with a lot of spirit - and yesterday Matakana Island's children and hundreds of other kids put their hearts into the Bay's intermediate quadathlon.
This is the first year Matakana had entered the competition - a 100m swim and 200m kayak into Pilot Bay, followed by a 6km bike ride and a 2km run.
Matakana had six in its overall team, four of whom competed in the multisport challenge.

30 chicks were fledged from Matakana Island itself with a record 43 breeding pairs residing on the island.
The Department of Conservation (DOC) has been running a protection programme for 13 years on Matakana Island which is one of the strongest breeding sites in the country.
No poisons are used on the island and this year’s trap count included 276 possums, 7 cats, 11 stoats and 22 rats.

 The KDV Mill
My family lived in many mill camps during the 1940s and 50s and this was a fairly typical layout, with the exception that most of the timber was being cut from the forest on Matakana Island which was across the harbour.
Between the Taihunganui's house and the village hall the road turned left and led down to the shoreline with the huge mill complex on the right, and at water's edge was a wharf with various shackle devices for hauling logs and for securing the towing launches...it was also an ideal fishing spot.
Mervyn Bergersen visited Matakana Island recently and the railway iron anchors are still embedded into the foreshore...
