	Matale - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		Matale is a town in the hill country of Sri Lanka, 96 miles from Colombo.
		The Matale administrative district also contains the historic Sigiriya rock castle, and Dambulla temple.
		The town itself is 16 miles from Kandy, another ancient capital where the Temple of the Tooth Relic is found.

		During the 1848 Matale Rebellion, the British sent an army of Malay soldiers in search of Sinhala rebels to Nalanda and they were attacked by some people in Aluwihare and the temple premises became a battle-field.
		The Chairman of Aluwihare Archaeology Preservation Board G. Matale Cyril Gamage was able to get the co-operation of Buddhist, Hindus, Christians and Muslims to held the Sangayana Perahera for the first time in 1973 and it is still being held.
		Atipola Medhankara, Nayake Thera, of Aluwihare temple told the writer, it was very difficult to find dancers, drummers and specially tuskers and elephants in August as there are very many peraheras in several parts of Sri Lanka, and the Board has decided to hold Sangayana Perahera in April hereafter.

		The celebrations had evidently concluded on January 16th as the account lastly mentions that the couple was expected to return to Matale on January 16th and pandals were being erected for further celebrations for their reception.

		The Crime Branch of the Matale police arrested a Buddhist priest and a man from Pannipitiya area suspected to be involved in the robbery of treasures by breaking three statues of deities in the historical Aloka Viharaya of Aluvihare, Matale, recently.
		According to Matale police, four others including the principal suspect who is a renowned businessman of Kurunegala, who are responsible for this treasure hunt are yet absconding.
		Police investigations revealed that the other suspects are residents of Chilaw and Nattandiya and these treasure hunters have taken shelter in the Polwatta Raja Maha Viharaya, in the Mahawela police area to discuss the plan of robbery and that they are responsible for a series of robberies committed in Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura and Hemmathagama.

		The police wanted the three young men to come to the Matale Police to make a statement, and forced them into their jeep and took them away without producing any arrest warrant or memo of arrest to the family members of the victim.
		When Muthiah Balakrishnan, the father of B. Shiwabalan, went to the Matale Police Station with his friends to meet his son, they observed that the victims were handcuffed and held to the benches with iron chains.

		For us Matale would be unthinkable as a habitat for Väddas because its present inhabitants are mostly Sinhala, followed by later immigrants into the region, Muslims and estate Tamils.
		It therefore seems, that as far as the Väddas of Matale are concerned, they were as internally differentiated as the Sinhalas though they probably did not have anything approximating the latter’s caste system; and some were clearly already adopting high status Sinhala narnes.
