 ABOUT MATARA
About 5km (3 miles) east of Matara is Dondra Head, Sri Lanka's southernmost extremity, with a tail lighthouse for a landmark and fine views of the coast to either side.
It's a quiet place, though centuries ago it was one of the most important entrepots for Sri Lanka's spice and gem trade with the Middle East.
With around 40,000 in habitants, Matara is the largest town on the south coast and, as the terminus of the railway line from Colombo, is the gateway to the region.

During their occupation of Sri Lanka the Dutch built a small outpost fort on the north bank of the Nilwala estuary at Matara in the form of a five-pointed star, in order to guard the river crossing.
The colourful, somewhat garish, modern Wewurukaimala Temple at Dikwella village near Matara is quite an eyeful, featuring hundreds of brightly painted and gilded models depicting scenes from the life of Buddha, and numerous murals, some of them rather ghoulish.
There is also a Buddha effigy that is one of the world’s tallest, equalling the height of a five-storey building, which visitors can ascend on the inside to enjoy the view from the top.

The cricketers visited Sri Lanka Cricket's Cricket-Aid camp in Matara, the first of four emergency camps to be opened across the island.
Sri Lanka's cricketers toured the south coast over the weekend, distributing food, medicine, clothing and toys and meeting with tsunami victims in emergency relief camps in Matara, Tangalle and Hambantota.
Sri Lanka Cricket's Cricket-Aid programme is seeking to help address this situation by providing trauma counselling training this week to the volunteers that will be working in their camps across the island.
