Owing to Rudyard's high office, this was quite controversial, and in 1685, the Board of Proprietors issued an order regarding the laying out of land.
On November 8, 1977, the residents of Matawan Township voted to change the name of the Township to create a community identity separate from that of Matawan Borough.

ABERDEEN — A 15-year-old Matawan Regional High School student was arrested by township police for allegedly bringing a.38-caliber gun to the school.
Students at Matawan Regional reported the 15-year-old to the school’s Principal Kenneth Smith after the student allegedly showed the gun around the school, Monmouth County Prosecutor John Kaye said.
Although there have been a few reports of students with weapons in county schools, the majority of students are law-abiding and are quick to alert officials if they see a weapon, Kaye said.
