Matched filter - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A matched filter is obtained by correlating a known signal, or template, with an unknown signal to detect the presence of the template in the unkown signal.
The matched filter is the optimal linear filter for maximizing the signal to noise ratio (SNR) in the presence of Gaussian white noise.
Matched filters are commonly used in radar, in which a signal is sent out, and we measure the reflected signals, looking for something similar to what was sent out.

Matched Filter output from an FSK demodulator -- cocoaModem uses a true matched filter on the mark and space signals and this waveform shows the signal formed from the difference of the two matched filter outputs.
Matched filter output from a wave-shaped AFSK signal -- this is the same signal as the above but the FSK signal is generated by bandpassing an AFSK signal using the 7-th harmonic filter mentioned earlier.
Matched filter output from a more severe wave-shaped AFSK signal -- the same phase continuous signal is passed through the bandpass filter with cutoffs at the 3rd harmonic of the keying signal.

The filter was chosen to match the rising arm of the startle response, as shown in Figure 2.

The matched filter can be tailored to best represent the response of individual users, however the shape of the response is similar for many people and in this paper the typical response filter in Figure 2 was used for all subjects.

Matched Filtering and Timing Recovery in Digital Receivers - match filter, timing recovery
By filtering the received signal with such a filter at the receiver, the frequencies containing the data signal are passed while the remaining frequencies are attenuated.
This matched filtering limits the amount of the noise spectrum that is passed on to subsequent stages in the receiver.
The concept of the matched filter receiver is introduced as a way to limit the noise at the receiver, as well as to provide a high SNR sampling point due to the correlation gain.

Electromagnetic Filtering: It is known that the nature of the materials from which electromagnetic filters are made causes the response of the material to light or other electromagnetic signals to depend upon the frequency of the signal impacting the material.
The filters may be thin film filters, in-fiber gratings, fiber optic Bragg gratings, spatial light modulation filters, or any other filter which will alter the amplitude and phase of individual frequencies of the modulated pulses in order to produce the desired signal form.
It is the same filter as block 52 and may be constructed of the same materials as the filter in block 52.

We find that the use of a matched filter designed for one image with the pre-processing approach does generally produce a detection spike when applied to another image, but false peaks on other features are also produced which are often larger than the peaks at the true eyes.
Specifically, the filter produces the highest peak at the eye for which the filter is matched and produces a lesser peak at the other eye.
While the detection of both eyes may usually be accomplished by the selection of a suitable detection threshold (particulary with the normalized approach), the magnitude of the primary and secondary peaks and the magnitude of the other high points in the image background varies widely from image to image.
