Matching Pennies - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Matching Pennies is the name for a simple example game used in game theory.
If the pennies match (both heads or both tails), Player A receives one dollar from Player B (+1 for A, -1 for B).
If the pennies do not match (one heads and one tails), Player B receives one dollar from Player A (-1 for A, +1 for B).

It is a mathematical fact, although not an easy one to prove, that every game with a finite number of players and finite number of strategies has at least one mixed strategy Nash equilibrium.
The mixed strategy equilibrium of the matching pennies game is well known: each player should randomize 50-50 between the two alternatives.
In matching pennies, Holmes and Moriarity are indifferent: they have no positive reason to randomize 50-50 rather than doing something else.

 Game Theory
Instead of just solving an optimization problem (which is not always trivial, say if there's a lot of randomness and the decisions must be made over time), game theory is about the optimization problem of all the players, being solved simultaneously, where some of the constraints are the choices of others.
It turns out that in matching pennies, in accordance with intution, the optimal randomization is to play each choice with probability.5.
The concept is simply this: suppose that you consider all the possible (non-randomized, or 'pure'--like H or T in matching pennies) strategies available to you.

 Evolutionary Game Theory
Yet a difficulty arises with the use of Nash equilibrium as a solution concept for games: if we restrict players to using pure strategies, not every game has a Nash equilbrium.
While it is true that every noncooperative game in which players may use mixed strategies has a Nash equilibrium, some have questioned the significance of this for real agents.

Many decision-makers respond to the information about previous decisions (whether or not to help others) of the recipients.
Thus, the evolutionary success of individually costly but group-beneficial behaviors in the relevant environments during the first 90,000 years of anatomically modern human existence may have been a consequence of distinctive human capacities in social institution building.
