  The Matchmaker
The Matchmaker is a 'soft' romantic comedy with a feminist (Janeane Garofalo) central character who struggles in her job as an aide for a Massachusetts Senator (Jay O. Sanders).
She arrives in Ireland during the annual matchmaking contest, an age-old tradition whose current champion is the lyrical Milo O'Shea.
Everyone, it seems, becomes a player in the matchmaking, except for Leary, of course, because he is in the film only to round out the full compliment of comedic characters and he is much too dense to even understand love.

Of all the marriage-minded weapons in the matchmaker’s arsenal, the advertisements were among the most powerful.
Hell, he’d done his share of warming up the long nights with someone soft and biddable and more than able to fill out the ‘fit of her shirtwaist.’ Granted, he hadn’t had time for any of that for a while now...but that didn’t mean he needed his friends and neighbors making him look the fool.
If she was the matchmaker, stopping her activities would improve work at his lumber mill and fulfill his promise to the Men’s Club, both.

Romantic Comedy: A political aide, hoping to garner votes for her Senator, travels to Ireland looking for his genealogical roots and finds herself in the middle of a local matchmaking festival.
