I first became aware of the Mateba autorevolver a couple of years ago, this new handgun design appeared quite strange to say the least but it promised to be a new innovative design that might make some major improvements to the revolver design that has been basically unchanged in the 20th century.
You might be wondering what exactly a "autorevolver" is? Basically the Mateba operates like a regular revolver, it holds six rounds, you fire them and to reload you open the cylinder, dump the empties and reload, but the way that the Mateba does all of this is very unconventional.
First the Mateba has an interchangeable barrel system, not a bad feature to have in a handgun, the system is not unlike the system used on Dan Wesson revolvers for many years.

Mateba Autorevolver - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Developed by the Italian gun manufacturer Mateba Srl, the Mateba Autorevolver, sometimes referred to as the Mateba Model 6 Unica, is one of the few types of hybrid handguns called automatic revolvers.
This brings the barrel closer to the grip of the handgun, reducing the upward recoil of the gun and increasing accuracy.
The character Togusa in the various incarnations of Ghost in the Shell carries two different Matebas.

The Mateba Model M207 is a fairly unusual revolver designed in the 1990s.
The Mateba's six round cylinder is hinged at the top of the revolver, so the cylinder can swing out and over the top of the frame.
Added features to the Mateba is a safety that blocks the hammer from striking the firing pin and easily interchangeble grips and barrels.

 MATEBA AutoRevolver 6-Home Protection
The autorevolver "6 Unica" with its aesthetic and unique finish, its accuracy and very soft recoil is possibly one of the best handguns on the market.
Born in the beginning of 1997, the Mateba autorevolver "6 Unica" is the most advanced version of the revolver.
The firing position is ergonomically positioned and the aiming is simply fantastic; the barrel is aligned with the bottom chamber of the cylinder to avoid the "jumping".

Reloading is difficult because the cylinder swings out from the top, so the cylinder can't be emptied of spent rounds with the same hand that holds the gun.

Mateba Model M207 Revolver   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
The Mateba M207 (which in the english version of the movie is pronounced Mataver) is a very unusual revolver designed and built in the 1990s.
It's all the more unusual becuase it fires off 9mm parabellum rounds which is more commonly used in semi and fully automatics, NOT revolvers. The Mateba's six round cylinder is hinged to the top of the gun, allowing it to swing over top of the frame.
This very annoying flaw in the design makes it almost impossible to ejects the spent cases with the same hand that is holding the gun, you can see this when Togusa reloads the Mateba with a tracking round.

You couldn't buy one from out of state, either, because you'd have to have it transferred to an FFL in CA, who wouldn't be able to transfer it to you.
The only way that, as a private citizen in CA, you could obtain an 8" nickelled Mateba would be if another CA citizen had one and wanted to sell it to you.

I can see the idea behind the Mateba, sort of a cross between revolver and semiauto - though even Mauser and Webley couldn't make it successful in the market.

Posted - 07/19/2004 : 9:31:23 PM I remember seeing the Mateba for the first time at the IWA Show in Nurnberg in around 1984 and its designer was a fellow named Ghisoni who built it for ISU rapid fire competitions.
The first models looked all the world like a semi automatic pistol with a revolver cylinder hanging down in front of the trigger gaurd and were chambered for.38 Special.

The M207's hexagonal barrel is aligned with the bottom-most chamber to be more in-line with the firing arm, and the design is also counterbalanced by a top-mounted weight.
The Trigun is Mateba's M207's big brother, chambered for.357 Magnum.
The Trigun has very similar lines to the M207, as it has a very distinct solid overbarrel lug, and the barrel is aligned with the cylinder's lowest chamber.

(Note: A few people have emailed me saying that it's based off the Mateba design, but after looking into this, it's not the case.
The Mateba works more like an semi-automatic pistol, than a revolver.) The unique thing about this gun is the barrel, it's fires off the lower part of the cylinder (the barrel is underneath) The gun also has other "special" uses specific to Vash, but you find out what later on.
