One of the oldest and richest libraries in the world, the Matenadaran, as the Armenian manuscript library in Yerevan, capital of Armenia, is known, is one of the world's leading repositories of ancient manuscripts.
The Matenadaran's first catalogue, prepared by Hovhannes Shahkhutanian and prefaced by French academician Brosset, was translated into French and Russian and published in St. Petersburg in 1840 with details of 312 manuscripts.
It is at the Matenadaran that one can find the largest book in the world, weighing 27.5 kilograms and measuring 70.5 cm by 55.3, placed alongside the smallest book in the world, weighing a mere 19 grammes.

The number of the Matenadaran manuscripts was especially increased later, when private specialists were involved in procuring, description and preservation of the manuscripts.
To facilitate the safety and research of the manuscripts, on March 3, 1959, according to the decision of the Armenian Government, the Matenadaran was reorganized into an institute of scientific research with special departments of scientific preservation, study, translation and publication of the manuscripts.
All the treasures of the Mashtots Matenadaran are being worked up and studied in the departments of scientific preservation and bibliography and are open for historians, philologists and scholars, who study different branches of science, giving an opportunity for a thorough study of all the branches of the medieval history and culture.

Mesrop Mashtots' Matenadaran Institute of Ancient Manuscripts in Yerevan, Armenia, is one of the richest depositories of manuscripts and books in the world.
In 1920 the collection, held at the headquarters of the Armenian Apostolic Church at Echmiatsin was confiscated by the Bolsheviks, combined with other collections and, in 1939, moved to Yerevan.
On March 3, 1959 the Matenadaran Institute was formed to maintain and house the manuscripts and in 1962 it was named after Saint Mesrop Mashtots.
