Block out the Materium and the senses associated with it; then the sense of the faint pulses of the Immaterium became far superior.
Maybe not thought Luther, for the Immaterium is not bound by the rigid spatial-temporal laws that bind the Materium.
A sensible precaution thought Luther, for the Warp is ultimately one with the Materium, an influence on one has an influence on the other and the Gods may favour the brave- or even the insane- but not the careless.

As the 41st millenium is 40,000 years in the future it seems unlikely that any of todays religions have survived.
During this time humanity were so full of themselves that they really didn’t have any room for religion, coupled with their advances in science and their complete understanding of the materium I guess the concept of god was squeezed out of existence.
The only problem with this in the WH universe is that gods do in Warhammer with 100% certainty, and the golden age of technology civilization really wasn’t prepared for Psykers, and didn’t understand what was going in.

Warhammer takes a different approach; in both settings as far as I can tell each of the various humanoid groups can’t mix because they are so very different.
I think Warhammer is updating and changing, and has a distinct edge because of it.
I agree that 40,000 years aint much but I disagree that environmental effects are that major.

they're the manifestations of the ork emotions, and as such don't try to corrupt/influence the materium like the chaos gods do.
since they don't actually push a great deal of power into the materium (again, as far as i'm aware), things wouldn't really change for them if the C'Tan managed to seperate the materium and immaterium.
Unless the seperation would mean that no souls and emotions pass over to the warp anymore.

That can take for a few seconds (Distance in the materium world dosn't matter) or thousand of years.
This process is called a jump or hop, longer jumps or hops are dangerous cause is not sure when or where the ship will reappears or there is a great danger to be consumed by the horrors that lay inside the warp.

In the 40k universe, this is pyromancy and of course is an isolated discipline among many.
There are many other abilities that don't directly afect the materium at all - and I'd imagine most abilities operate primarily on the warp plane - interfering with sentient creature's minds and tinkering with the warp aura of inanimate objects.
