Math rock - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Math rock is a style of rock music that emerged in the late 1980s.
During the 1990s, the greatest concentration of math rock bands was in the urban centers of the U.S.'s Midwestern "Rust Belt," ranging from Minneapolis to Buffalo, with Chicago being a central hub.
The Chicago-based engineer Steve Albini is a key figure in the scene, and many math rock bands from around the country have enlisted him to record their albums, giving the genre's recorded catalog a certain uniformity of sound, and lumping his bands past and present, Shellac, Rapeman, and Big Black into the pigeonhole as well.

Metal-Rules.com - Heavy Metal - The All Encompassing Genre?
The fact the there are so metal many sub-genres is one example but more so is the willingness of bands to incorporate new ideas and elements to their music.
Metal has it's OWN elements of course, but in my opinion heavy metal which many view as a close minded musical style is exactly the opposite particularly when it comes to it's musicians.
I think metal is "all-encompassing" in the sense that it evokes many types of emotions in a listener, at least a listener who loves metal.

 MetalTabs.com Forum - WTF Is Math-Metal????
Math metal tends to consist of bands that you could class as 'technical hardcore', I suppose, due to the hardcore style vocals and complex riffs - DEP being a point in case.
Math metal to me is jazz-like time signatures, complex riffs, 'jagged' dissonant chords, not much downtuning and - I think one of the main reasons why I don't class technical death metal as math metal - hardcore vocals.
Math metal is basically metal designed to pull out your brain, throw it in a blender for 5 minutes and then put it back in your head.

Mainly relying on simplistic jazz guitar seconds, the band adds the ‘math’ in the way of metallic seconds, usually blasting away the songs and then picking up the pieces by seemingly establishing a more conventional uniformity.
A little lower in the album is bassist Fabio Fecchio whose participation in the record is absolutely necessary, not only is his delivery the most elegant of all, but it is his part which during most of the album seems more preoccupied with transmitting a feeling rather than a mindf**k of an equation.
“Math metal” was not only tagged that because it was complicated and difficult, but also because it was probably meant to be hated and dismissed by some.

Metal Reviews - Metal Coven Webzine - Metal Reviews - Capharnaum - Fractured
Capharnaum's second album, 'Fractured', is a great example of combining the brutality of bands like Malevolent Creation and Morbid Angel, the destructive technicality of Cryptopsy, the finesse of Death, and some of the math-metal stylings of Dillinger Escape Plan and Meshuggah.
Always melodic and creative, they both display a style similar to those found on early 90's Death albums, with a sense that there was some thought put in before hand, as opposed to a reckless, "off the cuff" feel of many other death metal axemen.
They prove that death metal can be smart and catchy, as well as brutal, while maintaining a highly technical aspect.

Meshuggah is a band that needs no introduction; there are few members of the metal underground who are not somewhat aware of Sweden's masters of math metal.
They have revolutionized extreme metal, have been a part of the Ozzfest summer tour, and have even been called one of the most important metal bands of all time by the likes of Rolling Stone Magazine.
But for those who can stand the metal maelstrom, "Catch Thirty Three" is rewarding, one of Meshuggah's strongest releases, if not their most accessible.

Math sneaks its way into music in ways you may never have imagined.
See, Vaux incorporates math into the screamo sound in a much simpler sense: While most of its peers have two guitars and a bass – 16 strings total – Vaux sports 22.
If math sounded more like Vaux’s progressive take on a stagnating genre, a certain math-hating Aversion scribe might’ve stayed awake for a few more of his calculus classes.

Presaged by the proto-fl metal, Venom-influenced '80s thrash of Sweden's Bathory, Scandinavian metal became a dominant force in the heavy metal underground during the '90s, with a reputation for producing some of the most extreme death and fl metal ever recorded.
Swedish death metal bands, meanwhile, tended to favor thick, grinding, detuned riffs instead of a blur of white noise.
When attention first focused on Norway's almost cartoonishly violent fl metal scene in the mid-'90s, Mayhem were dubbed its godfathers, but most of the critical accolades were bestowed upon Emperor, whose musical innovations have had more impact on the genre than any other band.

By now, the subsets of metal are so numerous that it’s hard to keep track of them all: death metal, pop metal, hardcore, grindcore, thrash, math metal, prog metal, art metal, and, of course, just plain old heavy metal.
The heavy metal of Iron Maiden, Megadeth, and early Metallica is largely forgotten, as are metal’s roots.
In contemporary radio parlance, everything "alternative" is pretty damn heavy, with tastes evolving to the point where we have "adult alternative" as one of the fastest-growing formats, for folks who can’t stand Britney Spears, but threw out their fl T-shirts five years ago.

In that sense too, " math " being a general metaphor for speaking of abstractions, of concepts, or symbols.
It's the general human nature to try to box things in, and close artists in, and draw correlation with other things, it gives a point of reference which is valuable to the audience, but in the process it also limits the artist.

Meshuggah - Biography - AOL Music
Offering a complex form of metal that combined the sweeping adverturism of math rock, the oddball tempos of experimental jazz, and the stunning brutality of thrash metal, Meshuggah raised the bar for metal bands everywhere upon their debut.
The roots of Swedish metal band Meshuggah were planted in 1985; originally named Metallien, the founding line-up included frontman Roger Olofsson, guitarists Peder Gustafsson and Fredrik Tordendahl, bassist Janne Wiklund and drummer Örjan Lundmark.
A good word from Ozzy Osbourne's son Jack scored the band a spot on the annual Ozzfest tour, where they flourished on the second stage, often stealing the show with their original and savage math metal.

Full length number two from this modern hardcore/math metal hybrid band featuring members of Coalesce and Today is the Day, who should just start calling themselves, “The Esoteric-No, We Are Not The Funeral Doom Band From The UK, We Are From Lawrence, Kansas”.
Though still angular and convoluted in their off kilter, hardcore/math metal tones, The Esoteric now deliver their crunchy extroverted riffage by way of less feral expulsions and more progressive, easier to digest hues that warrant radio play.
Quite honestly, the band seems a bit undecided in their style, and the result is a jack of all trades sound that does all their chosen styles well, but excels at none and along with Steve Cruz’s lack luster shouts and semi croons, make for a album that takes a step backwards from the debut.

Because metalcore is a hardcore punk/heavy metal crossover, bands such as Converge, and The Dillinger Escape Plan are often referred to as "hardcore," and still others, such as As the Sun Sets, The Crinn and Daughters, are labelled as grindcore and noisecore, though only influenced by one or both genres.
