  Math rock - FoxyTunes
Math rock is a style of rock music that emerged in the late 1980s.
Whereas most rock music uses a basic 4/4 beat (however accented or syncopated), math rock frequently uses odd-time meters such as 7/8, 11/8, or 13/8, or features constantly changing meters based on various groupings of 2 and 3.
Math rock often sounds familiar but somehow "off." It fits into those genres but is never a classic example.

Math rock - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Math rock is a style of rock music that emerged in the late 1980s.
During the 1990s, the greatest concentration of math rock bands was in the urban centers of the U.S.'s Midwestern "Rust Belt," ranging from Minneapolis to Buffalo, with Chicago being a central hub.
The Chicago-based engineer Steve Albini is a key figure in the scene, and many math rock bands from around the country have enlisted him to record their albums, giving the genre's recorded catalog a certain uniformity of sound, and lumping his bands past and present, Shellac, Rapeman, and Big Black into the pigeonhole as well.

Although Rodan's existence was short, producing only one album, their impact on math rock and post-rock was far-reaching; what was more, most of the members moved on to new projects that were often just as challenging, whether they resembled Rodan's musical modus operandi or not.

However, one good way to describe it is as a style of rock that has almost no trace of folk or blues, which is the traditional definition of rock.

Math rock got its feet wet in Louisville, Ky., and its main oracle is Slint's jaw-dropping 1991 record, "Spiderland," an album some still listen to with the same awed reverence with which penitents gape weeping at icons of the Virgin Mary.
The point is this: One of the finest bands to spin off from the Louisville-Chicago math rock axis, June of 44 is moving the math rock sound forward in new ways that are both intense and eloquent.

Post Rock/Math rock, a progressive rock music sub-genre
Math Rock is a genre that emerged in the late 80's and that was influenced by both the intricacies of progressive and avant-garde rock - King Crimson, Frank Zappa, Henry Cow - and 20th century composers such as Steve Reich and John Cage.
The name Math Rock is a term that grew out of the Chicago scene and the artists working with engineer Steve Albini in an effort to describe the new style.
Just another post rock album, but this time with an interesting twist in the booklet, (in the genre, the booklet is usually anything but seriously taken), but otherwise, even with the slight tracks’ sonic differences, there is absolutely nothing new under the sun.

The four piece (originating from New Orleans) has scattered influences that are apparent without being obvious, and touch on everything from DJ shadow styled beats, moments of beauty and grandeur a la Bjork, and vocals that pay legitimate homage to Police-era Sting.
