Talk:MathWorld - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I did look for a list of inconsistencies in MathWorld as is suggested by some posters to sci.math, but it seems that any post is necessary incomplete because Eric Weisstein, the encyclopedist of MathWorld, would have corrected these errors soon after they were found.
So when the MathWorld article concludes at the end that the solution set to x^2 - y^2 z =0 is the union of the Whitney Umbrella and the handle (the negative z axis), this is incorrect since the solution set includes the positive z axis.
If there are disagreements it is not between wikipedia and mathworld it is between wikipedia's sources and mathworld--unless someone was using original research, which is against wikipedia policy.

MathWorld is an online mathematics reference work, sponsored by Wolfram Research Inc., the creators of the Mathematica computer algebra system.
While the information in MathWorld is considered generally correct some people point out that there have occasionally been misleading or false statements included in MathWorld[1][2].
There is no known systematic study of MathWorld's consistency so its quality remains a matter of debate and discussion.

Less than a year after the 42nd known Mersenne prime was reported (MathWorld headline news, February 26, 2005), GIMPS project organizer George Woltman is reporting in an email message that a new Mersenne prime has been reported to the GIMPS server.
While RSA-200 is a much smaller number than the 7,816,230-digit monster Mersenne prime known as M42 (the largest prime number known), its factorization is significant because the RSA-numbers serve as benchmarks for users of the RSA public-key cryptography algorithm in choosing suitable key lengths that provide an appropriate level of security for data encryption.

Wolfram Research Teams with Eric Weisstein to Develop MathWorld   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
Although it is often difficult to find explanations for technical subjects that are both clear and accessible, this web site bridges the gap by placing an interlinked framework of mathematical exposition and illustrative examples at the fingertips of every internet user.
By collecting and sharing mathematical knowledge in an extensively cross-linked and cross-referenced way, Weisstein hopes to be able to present it to a wide audience and provide a structure into which future results can be chronicled and disseminated without undue duplication.
MathWorld first gained recognition as part of Eric's Treasure Troves of Science, where it has been progressively developed over the last five years, earning numerous internet awards and honors.

Mathworld's interface is definitely better, and it appears much more complete.
Somehow, though, MathWorld hasn't been quite the same since the shutdown, and since the PlanetMath site is still young (compared to MathWorld, which has been around since '95) they're bound to close the completeness gap sooner or later.
We all had a deep love of the MathWorld, and it was shut down over a frivolous copyright suit with the CRC.

For now, however, my recommendation is to NOT buy this book or CD-ROM until the legal matter is resolved in a manner acceptable to Dr. Weisstein, and MathWorld is made available again to the Internet public.
